BANGKOK: -- The Airports of Thailand (AOT) says it is planning to invest 200 billion baht to develop six major airports over the next 10 years.

AOT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said yesterday that the company has formulated a 10 year master plan for the improvement and development of six major airports with an estimated investment budget of 200 billion baht.

But he stated that half of the budget will go to improving and increasing the capacity of Suvarnabhumi Airport which will allow it to handle 200 million air travelers.

This represents a more than 100 million improvement in passenger handling capacity from the current 83.5 million, he said.

Meanwhile, at the taxi rank in Suvarnabhumi....

Care to explain? I went through there last week.  No queue whatsoever, unlike every previous experience over the last decade.  The only negatives were that there was no one available to help explain destinations to the taxi drivers, and that I had to wait a minute or so whilst the driver was summoned from the taxi parking lot.  I suspect the former would be an issue for non-Thai speakers wanting to go anywhere outside the usual tourist ghettos.

Don Mueang, however, is an absolute disaster.

On the arrivals level I'd be happy simply being able to walk from area B to area C without being harassed by a guard - ridiculous.

Also what's with not being allowed to use certain escalators ?

Well the arrivals is designed badly, so you are indeed not allow to walk from one side to the other side. You have to take the escalator to the floor above to walk over and come back down. There is no such thing as not being allowed to use certain escalators.

There *is* such a thing as not being allowed to use certain escalators.  I know what he is talking about, as I've seen it in person.

I'm sure he means where the escalator is in perfect working condition, and actually "ON".  But there is a guard sitting in front of it with a little barrier -- and only Airport officials/workers who show their badge can go around the little barrier and use it.

So then you have to go around and use another further ahead or behind, or take an elevator.

But if this is the biggest complaint at BKK, then its looking pretty good.

I guess I never walk pass that part or I always take the ones behind. Thai design, hire a guard to guard a escalator...lol I'm pretty sure if the escalator goes up, it goes to the same floor / place where its not even restricted (or am I wrong again).

But not enough public funds for health care.

Thailand has lots of funds for everything, its just majority of the funds are misused - such as the ones that are given out to the Education Ministry.

I use to think the airport sky train link was for peasants until I actually used it. Fast, efficient, no traffic and most importantly no taxi driver yapping away asking me if I have family here blah blah blah

Why don't they just shoot for 365 million?  Then we don't have to do the math, probably ever again.

Have they named the 6 airports. A new one is sorely needed on Koh Samui to break the back of Bandit Airways who are ripping the travelling public off big time with exhorbatant fares.

And LHR is right up there with BKK as a MISERABLE arrivals experience for anyone who is not UK or EU citizen. JFK a close third.

They need to do BKK and DMK and make the latter a low-cost/regional , ie limited-connecting hub. BKK is rapidly becoming, if not already, a place to avoid at all costs: doesn't help when it's the destination.
