"Tourists come to Pattaya for nature not sex" says police chief as British businessmen blamed

It was tolerated in the past because that is all that it was known for and it was also much easier to keep it 'out of sight out of mind'. Now that more and more 'non-sex' tourists are going there and more importantly, with the negative exposure it now gets on global media, the sex scene has lost its value.

Thailand as a whole hasn't liked Pattaya since the 60s and up until recently, most Thais would avoid it like the plague. But in the last couple of years, there have been an increasing number of BKK residents who go down there due to the proximity to the capital but they have mostly stayed on the outskirts of Pattaya proper.

The new Pattaya to Hua Hin ferry was the beginning of an aggressive new plan to rebrand Pattaya as a more mainstream tourist spot, this recent development is just another step.

To be a "mainstream" tourist spot, one needs more than a load of restaurants set in a decrepit 'hole of decaying concrete and traffic jams, and with a filthy beach and polluted water.

Serious money would have to be spent, and I doubt that will happen.

natural wonders     I would point out there are many "unnatural wonders" in Soi 6 and elsewhere

  • Pattaya's police chief would have been better to just keep his mouth shut and let the Mirror article be forgotten.

  • This is nonsense. Everyone knows that tourists come to Pattaya to be mugged on Beach Road, have their pockets picked on Bahtbuses, to be targeted by police for imaginary traffic violations, to be over

I think that many posters here are missing an obvious point. Pattaya's new mayor has just been appointed by the military junta, and he's a police general. One of the junta's goals is to clean up Thailand's image abroad, so the police chief is probably just taking his marching orders from above, and the Mirror article is just an excuse to justify what has already been planned. The sex trade in Pattaya has been tolerated in the past because it's been viewed as being beneficial by the local authorities. However, the junta's view may be different. In Thailand, the tail doesn't wag the dog, especially when the military is in charge. If they really decide to curtail it, it will happen, and no one will be able to stop it. This happened in Ermita in Manila years ago forcing many of the clubs and gogos to relocate to Angeles.

And, like the bar scene in Ermita ( I  thought it was Makati, but never been to Phillipines, so could be the same place ) the Pattaya scene will just move elsewhere in Thailand. Even Chaweng had a large bar area in the 90s, and that, plus all other beach areas would become new Pattayas.

Well, now that there's a ferry to Hua Hin, maybe they'll just take that over and relocate :)

Btw, is it fair to make an argument that Hua Hin is more of a tourist/nature/resort than Pattaya ?  I've not been to Hua Hin but know a bit about it.

The bar scene in Makati is still going strong.

Pleas stop discussing the  Philippines this is the Pattaya forum in Thailand

'He stated firmly: "I can confirm that Pattaya is NOT a sex capital on a world level".' So he's checked out the rest of the world?

"What natural wonders would those be, I wonder?"

Pitiful question.  Evidently you are unaware of your geographical location.  FYI cognizance of nature goes beyond how your body responds to incontinence remedies  :cheesy:

Thailand wants to be the "hub" of everything that it isn't, and the one thing that it IS the hub of, it denies being the hub of.

The beach is virtually non existent at high tide due to illegal encroachment and horses crap on the beach when it is there. Even the beach where the palace is is filthy.

You don't appear to have actually answered his question. I know of no "natural" wonders near Pattaya, though some of the man made ones are spectacular. Nong Nooch and the Temple of Truth are indeed wonders.

I'll give you that the sunsets can be very nice.

BTW, take the make up off those women and they might not be so "naturally" wonderful

This European couple didn't come to Pattaya for the sex industry.

But they were disgusted by the wat nature has been treated in Pattaya.

There is actually a lake under all that, home to turtles, fish, water birds.

Fussy, fussy , fussy.

Those three girls would look even better all natural, in their birthday suits I am tipping.

Try 'Rose' from Walking Street. Nice flower.

The police chief should also remember that There was a little altercation in Vietnam, that started the American' coming over for R&R. Whose smart idea was that?

Give another more discrete name for a porn movie.....................................................................................................nature film.

Why do we go to Thailand/Pattaya/Bangkok...............................................................................................................to see nature

I consider the Thai girls to be lovely products of Nature.  That thai bar complex next to the little shopping area on Second Road even says "Made in Thailand"!

Does the S**t floating in the sea count as wild life[emoji28][emoji28][emoji28]
