PHUKET: -- Officials from various local government agencies were in Patong yesterday morning to welcome some 7,800 passengers enjoying a cruise from Singapore.

Phuket Vice Governor Sanith Srivihok believes the one-day visit generated around B31.2 million in revenue for the island.

Yesterday morning, V/Gov Sanith together with officials from the Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket Office, Phuket Marine Office, Phuket Customs House, and Patong Police Station were at Patong Beach to welcome some 7,800 tourists who disembarked Ovation of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas cruise liners to enjoy a day on the island.

They cruise liners left on the next leg of their voyage at 9pm last night.

The liners moored close to the 300 metre long Coral Beach jetty in Patong and once on land passengers were entertained by traditional Thai dancers.

The Bib welcomed them with a massiv congestion on the beach road triggered by a mia noi collection fund check point.

Well done. We all lost 30min because of that nonsens.

A more realistic guess is 4 mio baht.

Absolute low level tourists who only spend on dry fruits and water in big c.

Interesting 7,800 passengers, yet a quick internet search reveals,

"Capacity: 4,180 passengers (double occupancy) 4,905 passengers(maximum occupancy) MS Ovation of the Seas is a cruise ship operating for Royal Caribbean International (RCI)."

You did note there were two ships in port didn't you?

There were 2 ships.

Ovation of the Seas capacity is:

  • 4,180 passengers (double occupancy)[2]
  • 4,905 passengers (maximum occupancy)[2]

And Mariner of the Seas. Capacity is: 3,114 passengers.

Eguals a possible 8,019 passenger.

That is IF all the passengers get off.

Not disputing your figures, but don't forget about some crew members who may also be able to disembark.

I am meeting a couple arriving on Sunday on cruise ship much the same as described. The ship anchors in Patong Bay and hauls the passengers to that rickety pier (much like the old pier at Chalong Bay, not the nw one). Ship boats haul them to the pier where they have to pass through Immigration, then the walk down the fairly long pier to the ramp shown in the photo which exits on Beach Road. That's the south end of the bay so have ample opportunity to view the tuk-tuks and motorcycle rentals obstructing the road. Have to return to ship at 5PM, so have a nice all-day opportunity for touring the exciting T-shirt shops and souvenir stands of Patong on a hot Sunday. Don't expect much of the nightspots to be available but tourists will have ample opportunity for various scams and fleecings offered by the vary experienced locals.

Crew members aren't included in the passenger capacity counts. Crew accounts for an additional 2,685 people, of which most do not disembark.

Ovation: 4,180 pax (typical),  4,905 (utilizing all berths in quad capacity rooms)  + 1,500 crew

  Mariner:  3,114 pax  + 1,185 crew

Cruise ships never sail with unfilled rooms - so we're looking at a potential 7,300+ passenger disembarkations, plus whatever crew members can/do disembark.

"We have estimated that each passenger would spend at least B4,000 during the trip"

Wonder how that number was arrived at? 4,000 Baht in 7 hours.

I was thinking the same thing. 4,000 Baht seems awfully high.

That's a lot of T-shirts, Beer and Snail White cream.

how do they manage that ?    with some "press gangs"    or do they just keep lowering the price until they get takers ?

When it looks like they won't have a full ship, they make special offers to past guests that live near the port and can take a trip on short notice.

When doing my morning walks along beach up to that end (best bit in morning is the fish market and some of the characters there) talking to the mini-bus drivers seems most of the punters off the boats are on organised tours and que up with appointed reps alongside the beach rd (south end) then prob around 25% take a mini-bus trip /tour to Phuket town and then up to big Buddha then back via Kata/Karon, some stay aboard and yes a few walk down beach rd or the beach, can't see how they would be spending much money in Patong though other than water and maybe some fruit or lunch

I'm sure a few of the old boys go for a quickie somewhere!

But in reality it shows that the authorities just pick a figure out of the air, multiply it by an arbitrary number and there you have the TAT way of calculating tourist expenditure.

Those organised tours are also on Phuket, the transport to the destination is making money, and also the other tours to Phuket Town and Big Buddha are making money.
