Good optician for progressive lenses

Featured Replies

Hello.

I am looking for optic shop selling good quality progressive lenses for my glasses (in Bangkok)

Where can I find ? Thank you.

I shopped around for progressive lenses in Bangkok last year and found the price range for quality, name brand, high-index lenses was as high if not higher than the US.  I have a very strong prescription and even cheaper, heavier lenses were B20,000+   For top quality, high index polycarbonate lenses, prices got closer to B30,000 and that did not include frames. I went to about 7 or 8 shops, some around Petchabury Rd, Siam Optical on Sukhumvit, Top Charoun (highest price of all) and several others.

I had to go to the US last fall for medical treatment and while there, had my eyes examined and got a up to date prescription.  Prices in the US were very high as well so on the recommendation of a friend, I decided to try ordering online from Zenni Optical (www.zennioptical.com)  $130 for high index, polycarbanate lenses and a decent though not high end frame.  I had to return to Thailand before they were finished but Zenni shipped them to me here for $10 additional.  I have been using these glasses for five months now and am very satisfied, the prescription was spot on and the frames have held up well.

You can get an eye exam at Rutnin Eye Institute or probably the Ophthalmology dept of any major hospital.  My GF needed glasses so I took her to Rutnin (B1300) and then ordered 3 pair of glasses for her (one reading, one general and one sunglass) Her prescription was not a strong one.  The 3 pair cost less than $60 delivered.  Delivery in Bangkok was 2 weeks.

If you should decide to use Zenni or any other online retailer, make sure your prescription has the "PD", (pupilary distance) and head width.

Everything to do with prescription glasses is overpriced here. This probably explains why on every street there are several huge, glossy optician's shops with no customers in. They only need to sell one pair a day to cover costs and show a profit.
