Hello all

I Bought 30 anti depressants Valosine (Venlafaxine) and 30 sleeping pills Neutapine (quetiapine) from a psychiatrist clinic in Chiang Mai for 3200 baht. Did I pay "falang price"?

Thanks

More likely the "private clinic price".

Valosine can be bought over the counter and will be much cheaper in a pharmacy than at a hospital or clinic.

Quetiapine can only be gotten at a hospital or clinic -- and is not a sleeping pill, but a very serious anti-psychotic agent, anyone needing it needs  close supervision from a psychiatrist.

The least expensive source of it would be the government psych hospital, http://www.suanprung.go.th/eng/

Hi Sheryl

Your post was very informative.

Yea right, it is an anti psychotic!

The Dr. first prescribed Clonzapime to sleep, I contacted her because I had tolerance to the sleeping pills I was taking, which was Zopiklon.  When I got back I mentioned Clonzapime is an anti psychotic. "No it's not". Name of the Dr. is Kittiwan.

Very weird that she does not know that.

I am affected by bipolar disorder and Quetiapine is used for sleep in this case.

Few things:

Quetiapine (Seroquel in US market) is an antipsychotic but is also used for sleep in low doses.  I would ok giving someone 25-50 mg for sleep.  It will also help with anxiety.  Higher doses is where true dopamine-blocking and antipsychotic effects are seen.

As for  Clonzapime - are you sure the name is right?  Is it possibly Clonazepam (an anxiolytic/sleep aid/benzodiazepine) or Clozapine (an antipsychotic)?  There is a huge difference.

I'm actually not sure and have thrown away the cartridge.

I checked several different pharmacies -Finesco, University hospital pharmacy, pharmachoice, one more. Unfortunately all were about the same as the private clinic price, cheapest one was 1500 baht for 28 pills 75mg.

Please advise if there's a cheaper alternative somewhere.

As explained, if you are referrng to Quetiapine it is a controlled drug and available only in hospitals and psych clinics. The same is true of clonazepam. Only the Valosine is available OTC.

If the price you refer to is the Valosine, made by Standard Chem & Pharm then no, there is not going top be a less expensive source than what you have tried already with the possible (not sure) exception of the government pysch hospital. http://www.suanprung.go.th/eng/

Sheryl you are a golden star.

Would you mind giving some input on where to find the best price on ritalin? The private psychiatric clinic price is 40 baht / 10 mg pill which is too expensive for the ammount I need.

For posterity Valosine is more expensive in suanprung.

Hm, the Dr prescribed fluvoxamine for my girl and said it cannot be bought in pharmacy "because it is an antidepressant". Then lowered the price.

Is fluvoxamine really not available in pharmacy?

Should I be haggling on psychiatric meds?

Fluvoxamine is over the counter in Thailand, no prescription required. (Same is true foir many antidepressents). Available brands are Faverin ( western import, expensive) and Fluvoxin (Indian import, less expensive)

Ritalin  is expensive no matter where you get it as it is an import (as are all the other forms of methylphenidate in Thailand, there is no locally made generic).
