WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued requests for proposals for prototypes for a wall along the Mexican border, saying ideally it should be 30 feet (9 meters) high and the wall facing the U.S. side should be "aesthetically pleasing in color."

A wall to stem illegal immigration was one of Donald Trump's main campaign promises and has been highly controversial. The president has vowed to make Mexico reimburse the United States for its cost but Mexico has repeatedly said it will not do so.

Earlier this week, the White House requested $3 billion more for Homeland Security, with some of that intended for planning and building the border wall.

According to one document posted online by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Friday night, the wall should be 30 feet high, built using concrete, and "physically imposing." However, it says designs over 18 feet (5.5 meters) high could be acceptable.

"Designs with heights of less than 18 feet are not acceptable," the document said. It said the wall should have features that do not allow people to climb over it and should prevent digging below the wall.

"The wall shall prevent/deter for a minimum of 1 hour the creation of a physical breach of the wall (e.g., punching through the wall) larger than 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter or square using sledgehammer, car jack, pickaxe, chisel, battery-operated impact tools, battery-operated cutting tools, oxy/acetylene torch or other similar hand-held tools," it said.

The other document requesting proposals has many of the same requirements but it does not specify that it be solid concrete.

What a colossal waste of money. The Great Trump wall costing $20 billion, while millions of the poor losing healthcare coverage. Pathetic.

Yep! As I thought! Angela Merkel didn´t want to be in the same photo. I can´t blame her!

Take a real good look at the photo. Then imagine if this man was in charge of the worlds biggest nuclear arsenal!?

I dont think it will ever actually get built , also doubt that Trump even intends to try.

He will just claim that he tried to implement his promise but the nasty , pinko , lizard people stopped him.

If the wall is built- it will mostly keep out average Mexicans who want to come to America to work and help their family.  INstead of Trump and the Congress actually conceiving a real Immigration plan that would provide status to those currently in the US and allow a work Visa for needed labor- he wants to spend anywhere from $12 to $20 Billion on a worthless edifice while poor Americans go without any healthcare.

Not only is this effort folly; it is unethical and sinful. Trump will go down in History as the worst President ever.

The wall will be built......mostly to keep the very dangerous El Salvador criminals out.......They are 10X ruthless than any group in the US.

If that is the case, "The Great Wall of Trumpton" is unlikely to stop them....

And lets not forget the billions he wants to cut from Education. As if that is not in dire straits already!

The graffiti boys will take care of the Mexican side. In reality Trump should have an artistic competition for the American side. Lets call it a graffiti contest showing pictures of the new America how the "Make America Again" will look under Trump's guidance.  No violent pictures allowed.

If the wall gets built by one of Trump's companies , it will also likely be 'illegal' immigrants doing most of the work. Wonder if they will get deported before or after pay day ?

Plus, ultimately how many popl will it keep out?

Seems to me:

- US employers will still want off-shore workers in large numbers.

- Folks will just set up other means / other transport etc., to get to the places where work is availabale (inside US)and just avoid the wall.

So why pay US$30Billion of taxpayers money, plus maintenance costs for nothing?
