Policeman fined 500 baht after attacking a monk on his morning alms rounds

TRANG: -- A policeman in Trang in the south of Thailand was fined 500 baht after he grappled with a monk collecting alms on his morning rounds.

 

It is believed that the policeman mistakenly thought that the monk was a fake, Daily News reported.

 

But Phra Mahasaksorn Khongphon, 52, was a perfectly respectable monk from the temple of Wat Khlong Nam Jet.

 

Constable Manop Chaidech, attached to the water police in Trang, held the monk in a head lock then slapped him around the head to subdue him.

 

The policeman is thought to have been drunk.

 

Manop accepted the error of his ways later and paid a fine of 500 baht.

 

Since the attack Manop has not been into work. Her was taken home by his wife after the incident earlier in the week.

 

Prasert Songsaeng of Trang police played down the incident saying it was not a dangerous assault, while Manop had not been tested for alcohol in his system as a vehicle was not involved.

 

His boss at the water police Chatchai Sinla said he couldn't comment as to whether the policeman was drunk as he wasn't there. He said yesterday that Manop had failed to turn up for work.

 

He announced that a committee had been convened to look into the matter but stated that Manop was a man who often made merit.

 

A fine had been paid but they would try to find out what possible misunderstanding caused the officer to think that the monk was a fake.

Drunk or not, the police officer should have showed more restraint in dealing with, what would appear to be a peaceful monk. 

It doesn't bear thinking about what he would have done, had the monk resisted!

Wow! So the policemen can just think that the monk is fake and attack him, just only fined 500 baht! What happen if we also, can think that the policemen are fake and attack him and wondering is that the same amount for the fined? 555. Sometimes, really don't understand Thailand as this shouldn't have happen and the punishment is so light for him..............where is the equitable justice!

Wild West. Anyone who says the people in power are being genuine in pulling this country in the right direction is absolutely deluded. 

 

RTP always have their excuses when defending their own. It's always the same old "It's not serious". If you ever film them breaking the law, it's always "Oh, you cannot film them. That's very serious and makes us look bad".

 

Absolutely pathetic. I avoid the police here like the plague. Wouldn't trust them to do anything.

blame it on alcohol,no need for committee to figure that out. not tested as was not driving,

is drunk and disorderly not a crime here.and 500 THB fine,that will be a deterrent so he wont 

do that again

I wonder how long "inactive" posts would last if being posted to such a situation meant an automatic transfer into a crew membership amongThailand's dynamic submariners? The underwater military force could actually become useful as a deterrent: for public servants considering  corrupt activities.  Yes, you might be "inactive" for a few years while the authorities get their bathtub ready for their new toys, but you get a chance to redeem yourself on your first mission.

The parachute wings patches seem to be de rigeur for aspirational military careerists inj recent years. How about a blue bubble patch for submariners as the new black in uniform ornaments?
