How Much To Ship My Motorcycle Helmet Back To Usa?

Hello,

Just the other day here in Bangkok, I almost got killed riding my motorcycle. My bike almost went headon with a truck and I saw my life flash before my eyes. Very scary experience. I've decided to stick to reason and get rid of the bike. Just way too dangerous to be riding on the roads of LOS.

I want to send my helmet back to the states for when I return back to safer & saner roads.

What are the best prices to ship my motorcycle helmet back to the USA? I checked out FEDEX and it costs more than what my helmet is even worth!!!

Any other options? Local courier co's? Local Thai post office?

Please include rates and shipping method if you have any. And any extra costs for insurance.

I bought the helmet 2yrs ago for $450 US.

Btw, the helmet is about 4 lbs and dimensions aprox. (15 * 15 * 15 inches).

Thanks in advance,

~Thaiboxer

Under the terms of the Warsaw Convention all sports goods will be carried free by airlines adhering to the convention.

Therefore you need to buy yourself a set of skis and a rubber ski suit. If you wear these the next time you fly, you will find there will be no charge for the helmet.

I don't know if you are for real or not, looks like some don't think so.

But if you are, just take it down to the post office and they will give you the info, pobly give or sell you a box to put it in and then mail it for you for very little cost.

Riding on motorcycle myself since 35 years, I can confirm, that motorcycle riding is not without danger.... I had many dangerous situations, I was also working in a driving school as instructor for motorcycle and car in Europe.

For me personally, Thailand is a motorcycle paradise.....however with somewhat very different rules, we are accustomed anywhere else....Europe, States, or here in Japan.

If you are a real motor cycle fan, you should and you will continue to ride on a bike..... there is nothing better, nothing more beautiful, nothing can be compared with that feeling....no car can replace a motor-cycle.....

USD 450,- is a good helmet....

Just keep the helmet with you and reconsider....

Believe me, my friend, you will miss your bike soon....

Send it by standard airmail at the post office.

To the UK it cost approx 70bht/100g. I think the US is about the same. It should get there within 10 days. Dont use EMS though, it costs a lot more because its insured etc.

You get a proof of posting ticket. Though this will only tell you if it arrived in USA, and is not a trace.

The FedEx quote you received sounds strange. Try with DHL or TNT. Our office regularly sends items of that size (and much larger) to the US via courier and the prices are relatively reasonable.

Think twice about sending your helmet, though- better to keep it with you. A bit counterintuitive, but helmets are actually rather fragile- on a good helmet (not a Pattaya rental job) there's an inner shell that's designed to withstand a single severe impact. If it's dropped once then it could be ruined.

Even though motor racing helmets are designed to withstand multiple impacts, the rule of thumb for drivers is to either replace or get inspected any helmet that takes a tumble.

Cheers!

I checked with DHL courier and the price was still pretty expensive. 2774 THB.

They send it in 2business days but I don't really need to get it back home that quickly to justify paying that price. I can't bring the helmet back w/me on the plane as I'm still travelling through all of Asia. Next stop is China.

As for standard mail at the post office, airmailing an international parcel is 1450 THB and 1000 THB for SAL service. EMS is too expensive.

Is standard mail from the local post office reliable? Can I track it...worried it'll get lost. How long till it arrives in Canada?

How is this SAL service? Reliable? How long to get to Canada?

Anyone have any experience using standard mail int'l parcel. Since my helmet is fragile, do they handle it with care?

Cheers,

~Thaiboxer :o

PS. Johann, I'll always love riding, but the city streets over here are just too dangerous for me. I've been riding for 15yrs and will continue for a lifetime. Happy trails, brother.

Are you sure you did not buy a Thai helmet by mistake, you know the dual purpose ones made out of polythene so you can also use it as a bucket?

Standard mail sendings are not traceable.

Best option in terms of price and security appears to be REGISTERED (tabien) mail. Keep the receipt with you until you have received acknowledgment from the States that the parcel has actually arrived. If you are in Bangkok go to the main post office (brisanee glang) on Charoen Krung Road, they have a packing service and you can supervise the packing process yourself. Make sure heaps of buffer material (crumpled paper and/or bubble paper) that is only going to cost you a few Baht more is put into the box. For additional security mark the box to contain "fragile" material or ask at the packing service station whether they have an appropriate sticker.
