How to stop dog licking his paws?

We've had our little cross breed dog for over 2 years and in all that time he's been a paw licker/chewer, sometimes to the point of drawing blood and making himself limp. We've had him checked out at the vet a couple of times and they couldn't find any mite infestation or anything that would cause him to lick. At the moment we have to resort to a plastic cone and bathing his paws twice a day until the soreness clears up. Unfortunately the collar has to come off sometime and he'll probably go back to his bad habit. If I catch him I scold him and he stops, but can't watch him 24 hours a day. We've tried changing his diet as he may be allergic to something, but it doesn't stop him.

I might add that when he has to wear the collar he's absolutely miserable, like it's a form of torture. He just wants to sleep when he has it on, not interested in anything.

Maybe try a shot Ivermectine, or even better, Bravecto (tablet)

Thanks, but he's already been checked for mites, fleas etc and given the all clear.

My old dog had the same problem, drove us crazy, spent heaps on vets trying to find an answer. Ended up standing him in a bath of Malawash ( brand name) every day and let it dry on his paws . Seemed to work .

I rememeber years ago one of my neighbors in Canada had the same problem with his dog. His vet gave him a cream that he applied on his dog's paws. Something to do with the smell that the dog couldnt stand. Dont know the name of the cream but i wonder if your vet may know..

Malawash appears to be for fleas, and he doesn't have any of those. I think he licks because it's a kind of comfort/boredom thing, which is a hard cycle to break.

There is something called Bitter Apple that is supposed to be a deterrent.

Interesting thread as I too have a dog who for some reason has one rear leg (lower part) that for some reason must itch badly as she's frequently chewing at it, and sometimes whining whilst doing so.

 

As its only the lower part of one leg it can't be mites/fleas/allergy.

 

Edit - A friend recommended trying tea tree oil, so I started that today (watered down a lot obviously).
