BANGKOK: -- Legal actions against Dhammakaya Temple, its fugitive former abbot and followers will continue despite the lifting of a junta order declaring the vast monastery complex in Pathum Thani a “special control area” under Article 44.

Justice Minister Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana said Wednesday that the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) would continue pursuing cases against Phra Dhammachayo, who is wanted for money laundering and accepting stolen assets.

He said several legal cases against the temple, its supporters and people close to the fugitive monk also would not be affected by the lifting of the order issued under Article 44 of the interim charter.

Legal cases against people who had allegedly violated the order while it was in effect would remain despite the lifting of the order, the justice minister added.

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) announced the order would be lifted in the Royal Gazette on Tuesday.

The DSI yesterday withdrew its personnel from the controlled area, the agency’s deputy director general Korrawat Panprapakorn said. He said military personnel would remain stationed outside the temple to maintain security.

It simply amazes me that the police allowed this sort of farce to happen... Justifying it all the way for what? a year and half of wasted time. Why they didn't just walk in undercover and arrest his are before he fled. Why did they serve advanced notice that they would be seeking to arrest him? Why waste all that money putting on a year long show of wasted effort when they already knew they have him to opportunity to flee with their haphazard unorganized and unothordoxed methods of granting time to run.  This monk had more than enough opportunities as well as more than enough money to do as he pleased. What a giant egg on the police and Mr. P' s face. Thailand has lost face to all the world that know of this and other instances similar. Shame on them

Yes, indeed, but then they probably didn't want to catch him did they? He probably knows too much, and monks don't wear socks do they?

What a strange statement to make that , despite the lifting of the control zone introduced under the infamous Article 44,  they will still be persuing the abbot and his cronies.  Why would they not do so?  He is an alleged criminal, who has eluded justice for more than a year on one pretext or another, clearly sanctioned by the authorities, who seem a bit reluctant to nail him.

However, this saga is in the public eye, not only in Thailand but around the world, and egg on the face would be an understatement if they actually announced that they were NOT going after him.   It still remains to be seen, though, just how much REAL effort is made to catch him, rather than another big show as damaging to their wonderful reputation as the first one.

Something our English Language newspapers are careful not to mention. This ”sect” if you call it that is composed of lower middle class people and mostly former Red supporters. This seems to have bothered the government so much they went after them. In a “reconciliation mode” like they have been reconciling with that other party, heh,  …Once you know that, do you think these monks and abbots are really guilty of anything? Besides being a potential threat in the eyes of the powers that be?!

I have never been big fan of organized religion, but between this sect and the Boys in Brown and the military that backs them up, I would say there is a good chance this is nothing more than a set up, just based on reputation and history.

For all you Pats and Trollers that buy the Government story and wonder why they have not made a raid in force on the place. Check out how they have done the reconciliation process and that should give you the answer. They just keep chipping away while smiling and lying.

You deny half the population its political party and then their religion? That does not seem like a winning combo to me. I wonder where it will all end.
