EC's Somchai fears political vacuum following commissioners' removal
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Election Commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn said on Monday that he was concerned there would be a political vacuum when some of the body’s commissioners were removed as required by the new charter.

The new charter requires the commissioners to have higher qualifications.

The commissioners who do not meet the requirement will be removed immediately, and Somchai fears that will lead to a political vacuum until the new commissioners replace them.

Somchai said the replacement process would take around nearly three months, and during the period the EC could not do anything critical in regards to politics, including preparing for the coming election.

Somchai urged the National Legislative Assembly, which will deliberate on the law after the Songkran New Year finishes, to take this matter into account to avoid the political vacuum.

Not to worry. The whole of the Prayut government represents a political vacuum.
