Depa, 43 universities collaborate in digital start-up project

THE DIGITAL Economy Promotion Agency (Depa) is cooperating with 43 universities to establish a project called “Digital Start-up Thailand”.

Meetham Na Ranong, acting vice president of Depa, said the agency was spending around Bt117 million to set up the project, which began last September and will be complete by the end of this year.

Under the project, the agency has worked with 43 universities to set up start-up clubs in those institutions to train students nationwide in entrepreneurial skills.

They are also establishing co-working spaces such as Jump Space, Tuber Thailand and Punspace to incubate new start-ups.

As well, a “Digital Start-up Thailand” contest has been held to encourage digital entrepreneurs. Teams with more than 500 projects applied to participate in the contest, and 40 shortlisted teams will qualify for a training programme so that they will have the opportunity to acquire training both locally and overseas in digital start-up skills and business process training. The 40 finalists will be announced between April 28 and May 1.

Depa president Nuttapon Nimmanphatcharin said last week that the agency planned to support digital and innovation development as well as a new-technologies ecosystem so as to create competitive advantages for people in the country.

The agency will cover all areas of the digital economy and society development including special projects, non-profit projects, innovation-driven development for the new economy, strategic management, and digital community-driven development in provinces across the country.
