Voluntary or Mandatory

Well it's not both is it either Voluntary extra insurance you want yourself for extra cover or it is the car being on finance and the finance company insists it is has additional insurance.

They probably want to know if you want the mandatory minimum government required insurance "por ror bor" or if you also require additional insurance too

You can have both the first is mandatory the second is voluntary.

A bit like third party fire and theft

VS first class fully comprehensive insurance.

Thailand has a system where every car bus Larry bike must have compulsory insurance on the vehicle. This can be bought at the same time as your voluntary insurance class 1 or 2 ect. Or bought at the DTO'S direct when it's due another tax disc.

So the companies are asking you do you need compulsory insurance at the same time as you by your voluntary insurance.

If you have tax on your car now the compulsory will run out on the same date as the tax does.

So if you have an in date tax disc no you don't need compulsory yet.

By the way I found TV comparison site very expensive suggest you trawl around a bit on the internet web

Yes correct however you really need 1st class insurance for the car it does not matter if the dates of both voluntary and mandatory insurances are the same. The mandatory is very very basic just covers accident damage. I would hate to think by explaining the diffrent insurances you didn't cover yourself waiting for the mandatory to expire. Our tax and mandatory run out in July my 1st class cover in Dec no great problems at all.

"just covers accident damage"

Yes, but not to other properties, only, as mentioned very, very limited, to other people.

Not quite.

It is against the law to drive a vehicle on Thai roads unless it has the government minimum, mandatory insurance. You cannot renew the annual tax sticker if you don't have it which makes operation more illegal.

Voluntary insurance is any other coverage that the owner chooses to purchase since as mentioned by stevenl, the mandatory insurance is very limited and doesn't compare well with the UK's "Third party fire and theft" coverage.

Depending on the age of the vehicle, the amount of miles it does and the location, First Class insurance which is comparable to the UK's "Fully comprehensive" coverage may be a waste of money.

Personally, I recommend AA Insurance. They are good brokers who can advise what coverage suits and come up with some quotes for the OP to chose from.

Sorry that you had communication issues with one of their staff. Otherwise I have found them knowledgeable, very helpful and supportive especially when Mrs Nan was going through the usual mill after her car was t-boned by kids on a bike at night.

Oh christ on a bike!... it's a figure of speech.

Since you are a last word kinda guy when it comes to making sure that nobody tries AA Insurance ever if you can prevent it, I hope* that you always get a knowledgeable phone jockey when you are dealing with asia Direct. It seems that you have spoken to 'all operators' already but they may have some new hires. Do you call them every day to keep current?

*When I say I hope, please do not take it literally as you did with I'm sorry.

Not really sure what your problem is maybe even you have a stake in AA insurance I asked a really very simple question "why would you be sorry" your reply makes me belive you have in fact some sort of stake in AA. It's very very simple AA could not satisfy my need nor did they have sufficiant knowledge  about there products. I found another direct Asia who where knowledgeable and I took out a policy with them all very simple really. However you have or seem to have a problem with that for some reason best known own to yourself. As for your silly attempt to belittle me and a use me of having some sort of vendetta twds AA is quite childish.

What's simple is ONE person on the phone at AA was unable to help you thus you claim ALL the staff and management at AA are incompetent. Tenuous grip on reality there.

Your hypothesis: based on ONE person at asia Direct who had a clue means that ALL of them must be similarly enlightened. That is purely your rather ridiculous supposition.

You even tried to infer that you need to know the owner of AA to get satisfaction which I seriously doubt was the point being made by that poster.  But you made a meal of it anyway.

Too silly? Maybe, but you started it. Obviously YOU have an axe to grind with AA based on one instance of poor customer satisfaction and chose to advise the OP and others that based on this one-time event, they are to be totally avoided. I and others simple mentioned that we have had many years of excellent service from them.

I have no bloody interest in AA beyond being a very satisfied customer... probably only one among thousands though who probably have absolutely no opinion on asia Direct since we haven't had to deal with them.

Now go ahead, knock yourself out belittle yourself a bit more and have the last bloody word. I am done with your dumb arrogance.
