Pol General Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) chairman Pol General Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit has said the investigation into former Department of Special Investigation chief Tarit Pengdit will serve as an example for other cases against corrupt state officials.

Tarit who was found by the NACC to have obtained unusual wealth during his time as DSI chief.

Earlier this month, Tarit was dismissed from his post as an adviser at the Prime Minister's Office for being unusually rich and he is not allowed to appeal against the decision.

Tarit was removed as DSI chief and appointed to the adviser role in 2014 after the coup.

Watcharapol insisted the NACC probe followed the evidence and was not intended to “bully” anyone.

Talk is cheap. How many successful cases have been prosecuted and how many generals & police chiefs have you investigated. What about Suthep's Phuket land scandal in your file for over a decade. The agency is a farce and a tool.

There's not enough prisons to hold all the corrupt 'Officials'....even if all the prisons were already empty .

Corruption will never, ever be eradicated in Thailand because the people doing the eradicating are the most corrupt people in the land !

How exactly was it an example to other officials? He was allowed to walk away with his unusual amount of wealth without penalty. If he had been prosecuted for corruption, had his assets confiscated and gone to jail it would set a good example. This idiot just effectively gave the green light to officials to grab what they can while the going is good.

Tarit had obviously fallen out of favour and this was the revenge. A full and transparent investigation, though, would doubtless implicate many other people who are untouchable.

What Watcharapol should have said is 'Exposing and publicising the method by which Tarit received the illegal income is the acid test, without which the public may reasonably suspect that everyone in high office is corrupt."

Since the military coup that promised crackdowns on corruption, the NACC has concluded only a single case—the malfeasance investigation which led to the indictment of ex-premier, Yingluck. This is the very opposite to the war on corruption.

NACC has accepted 3,383 cases for investigation since inception in 1999. Only 105 convictions have been recorded mainly they involve infractions by mid- or low-level administrators such as mayors, school directors, policemen, clerks, and registrars.

I am not sure if they went after the mad monk Suthep for giving go ahead to award the building contract of police stations, abt 6.75 billion baht: or the recent interception of high priced vehicle's coming into the country as de-assembled cars that needed to be rebuilt. Doing it this way attracts a lower tax rate.

NACC employees are harassed and threatened in the performance of their duties, necessitating the use of bullet proof cars. They don't go after affluent, rich or high profile military types. That is their record.

Tarit is a fly in the ointment for the current flock in the high end of town. They will hassle him but that could be all.
