BANGKOK: -- The media reform panel of the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) on Monday voted to remove the proposed licensing requirement for media professionals from its draft media regulation bill, its chairman has told NRSA meeting.

Amid concerns by media professionals as well as Human Rights Watch, the media committee chaired by ACM Kanit Suwannet tabled the draft bill for NRSA deliberation on Monday.

Kanit said his panel was aware of media concerns regarding media licensing.

He said the licence proposal would be replaced by media certificates issued by the operators of media organisations.

The NRSA is deliberating on the draft bill now.

More transparent kite-flying by a junta that is constantly working to crush all opposition and any criticism of its policies, no matter how unpopular.

Don't Big Chief Five Rivers and his braves get fed up with having to do U-turns all the time?

A far better move would be to remove the entire bill and throw it in the trash. The last thing Thailand needs is more censorship.

Yep! Mr Freeman. Are you still from Halflife?

Accept or butt!

The junta through the Prayut government will decide the qualifications, language, and consequences for violation of such certificates. Remember that Prayut will have two members on the committee that will issue the now-called certificate. Expect to see a 20-year to life time media ban for anyone violating the terms of the certificate.

The certificate will be as much a tool of free press suppression as the license. Prayut should be honest and keep the license requirement that plainly meant to force media censorship than trying to obfuscate the true purpose of the certificate.
