PHITSANULOK: -- A woman driver was killed when her car plunged into the Nan River late Tuesday night, but a passenger in the vehicle escaped, police said.

Police learned of the accident on Wanchan Road in Muang district of Phitsanulok province at 11pm.

The deceased was identified as Prapassorn Bua-on, 54.

Her friend, Phatchaya Aramdilok, 54, managed to lower the window on her side and jump out before the car sank. Phatchaya said she told her friend to open the door on the driver’s side but she failed to do so and drowned in the river.

Phatchaya told police that she and Prapassorn were returning home after dinner at their friend’s house when the accident occurred.

Phatchaya said when they were driving, Prapassorn was suddenly startled and said something was crawling on her leg. She lost control of the vehicle as a result the car plunged into the river.

Scuba-divers took about an hour to locate the car, which was about 200 metres away from the spot where it had fallen into the river. It was salvaged by a crane 40 minutes later.
