HAT YAI: -- A scheme to encourage reading in the south of Thailand is going down very well among the young people in Hat Yai, Songkhla.

Three wheelers with sidecars have been kitted out as mobile libraries for children in 13 areas of the southern Thai town.

Some 16 vehicles have been adapted at a cost of 110,000 baht each after an idea promoted to the outreach education department by governor Songphon Sawattham, reported Thai Rath.

The mobile libraries are fitted with roofing so that reading can take place even in the sun and rain.

They bear the encouraging slogan in Thai: "Read everywhere at all times - Songkhla home of readers!"

Pictures in a Thai Rath report showed many local children enjoying the new service.
