WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors have issued grand jury subpoenas seeking business records from people who worked with former U.S. national security adviser Michael Flynn when he was a private citizen, CNN reported on Tuesday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, CNN said the subpoenas were issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Alexandria, Virginia. They targeted people who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was pushed out of his job as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014, it reported.

Flynn later joined the Trump campaign but was fired as the White House national security adviser by President Donald Trump in February after he failed to tell the truth about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

Flynn's attorney, Robert Kelner, did not respond immediately to a request for comment. A Justice Department spokeswoman said the department does not comment on the existence of ongoing investigations.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election to benefit Trump, as well as possible links to the Trump campaign.

Russia has repeatedly denied interfering in the U.S. election and the Trump administration denies allegations of collusion with Russia.

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, saying he had lost confidence in Comey over his handling of an election-year email scandal involving then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Flynn, a retired general, has emerged as a central figure in the Russian probes.

Investigators have been looking into whether Flynn properly disclosed payments from clients with links to foreign governments, including Russia and Turkey, CNN said.

Those who remember Nixon times, was the US admin in similar type of mess during the time when Nixon was kicked out?

Were there people who defended Nixon to the bitter end?

I have difficulties to understand why there are still so many Trump fans who wish to stop the investigation of this Russiagate? After all, those people are supposed to be patriots, not Russian fanboys. They should be the last ones who wish to be controlled by Kreml.

The World is weird.

Although subpoenas have been issued, with the sacking of Comey does that take away the momentum. Who will enforce that the subpoenas are actually carried through to their natural conclusion? I would have thought the DOJ could now stop this at any time. How worrying for democracy.

About time to launch some more tomahawks somewhere for a distraction.

Thinking of this. The US military must have drafted plans to stage a coup & release power to congress/senate,  in case Trump becomes even more unstable as he is now. After all it's their duty to protect US and plan for every situation.

Trump: "Let's use nukes against North Korea"

Generals: "Mr President. It's our duty to release you from power in order to protect the USA"

That would be nice, but unfortunately most Generals have an 'interest' in the Industrial Military complex and are more likely to say "Mr President, what took you so long".

Like someone said on the other thread, the checks and balances have broken down. The orange nutbag can act with impunity til enough congressmen stand up and do the job they were elected to do.

Again an action from P.... or D... Trump, that reminds strongly to the habits of dictators that want to strengthen themselves , their powers and try to degrade democracy and powers of parliaments and independent institutes.

The  once Great America, starts to slide faster and faster into the habits of South-Sahara dictatorial states.

Unnecessary as involuntary removal from office by Congress is already provided by the US Constitution called impeachment. The US military is not allowed any authoritarian role within the US.

Don't for a second think they aren't just giving him more rope. Go back a year from today. If you were to asked the Republican side of the joint congressional congregation whether they preferred Trump or Pence as president it would be the latter by a landslide. They are going through the motions of supporting Trump so his followers don't backlash them. Once enough evidence is found of Russian collation the Republicans will make it look like they are reluctantly dropping  him for Pence.

I do so hope this is true and all those recommending a military overthrow of government seriously reconsider your views.

The law should always be triumphant in all political matters.

As an Aussie I should not be commenting on US affairs but:

In Australia, it requires the authorisation of the Governor General of Australia (the Queen of Australias representative) to allow any involvement of Australias military forces to interfere in any activity on Australian soil.

As a soldier in the 70's, we waited patiently to be allowed to fight out of control wildfires in New South Wales. Permission granted, so we became temporary firefighters.

I remember the Kent University outrage when US National Guard were allowed to shoot students. Obviously, US and Australia are vastly different but hope some sanity remains in US. I mean, you guys voted this man in.

grand jury subpoenas seeking business records

The Watergate investigation started in earnest with following the money trail.

I expect to see more subpoenas for business records of Kushner who seemed to act as Trump's international business foil. At some point Trump's business and bank records if not also his tax returns.

Of course Trump could be proactive to the congressional and grand jury investigations by volunteering said information. However, proof of his and/or associates innocence might fall short of the alternate reality that Trump seems to enjoy.
