Don't confuse showing your TEFL with it having any bearing on getting a work permit.

It was more likely the personal relationship the school in the sticks has with the local IO. While the TEFL may have been comforting to see, it was not a legal determinant in obtaining the permit.

I was classified as a teacher. It is quite common for teachers to get a work permit up here in the sticks, without a degree, but you will need a TEFL certificate, and you won't get the same wages as y

You probably showed the school that you could wear a shirt and tie too, and yet again, that has nothing to do with getting a work permit,

Did not have to wear a tie.

I think it is time to end the back and forth discussion between a few members that is not of any help to the OP.

Correct...but if they class you as a non-teacher, the TEFL was not instrumental in legally obtaining the job. You don't need a TEFL to legally be a teaching assistant or 'consultant'

Again, thanks for the replies. All useful stuff.

The visa stuff is a bit of a minefield when looking through the vast amounts of stuff out there. Do you still need to leave the country (regardless of what visa I get) every 90 days though? I get confused with the single/multi entrance issue.

Visas are one thing and extensions of stay are another. That is probably why you are confused.

A non immigrant (non-b or non-o) issued by a embassy or consulate allows a 90 day entry. They can be issued as a single entry that is valid for 3 months or a multiple entry that allows unlimited 90 day entries for a year from the date of issue.

A extension of stay issued is by immigration can be issued that would allow you to stay for one year without the need to leave the country. When it ends you can apply for another extension. Once you get the extension you need a re-entry permit if you want to travel. They are issued as a single re-entry permit or a multiple.

That makes things much clearer. Many thanks.
