I'll bet you could free up a few slots by combining circuits so we could slip in a contactor to isolate 1/2 the board for load shedding. You would likely have to move breakers around, hope the original sparks left enough cable.

Yes all the breakers are in use as when we built the house 13 or 14 years ago I got the sparky to separate upstairs and downstairs and some of the sockets are on different breakers both up and down.

 

The problem with putting the ATS in one house is that possibly when the generator comes on line I may start feeding the grid.

 

I am a great believer in the KISS principle and I would rather put the ATS down by the generator and the c/o switch.

No we can arrange so that won't happen. You'll need to run a generator cable to the other house with a simple "slave" transfer switch over there.

 

Won't be a big cable, 2.5 or 4mm² depending upon the length and the size of your genset and it can run directly from the genset to the other house.

When on eco mode and 20 metre extension cord i can watch tv outside no problem.

It was 26,000 baht.

Have used it quite a lot this year with no problems except once when i couldn't get it to start and found a wasps nest in the exhaust.

Rather than start a new thread could someone advise me if it would be ok to trip main circuit breaker and run a extension cord straight from genset into wall plug to run the outside appliances,fridge,tv,lights and fans.

Or would the wiring be to small to handle 1 kva through the wall socket.

1kVA is only 4 Amps or so, so there would be no issue with overloading things.

 

BUT

 

It is extremely unwise to have a cable with a plug on both ends, it would of course work, but the danger of killing someone is too great.

 

Simple change-over switches are not expensive and will ensure that you never end up with the mains and genset connected at the same time.

Do you need quiet? The lower cost portables are more than somewhat noisy.

 

For your load I would be looking at about 4kVA capacity.

 

Do you anticipate a lot of use? If so you may want to consider something that can be made to auto-start on mains failure.

 

Where are you? Although the big name stores do carry gensets you may be better off looking for a specialist store in your area.

Pattaya area, more quiet and reliable better (i am ok with not the cheapest), use twice a month sometimes for 24h in a row.

Can go to Bkk to buy.

Possibly a bit big for you mind, it cost about 18k some years back and has been infinitely reliable. They do smaller ones of course, all powered by the Chinese copy Honda ("Chonda") engines.

 

I've modified it to full auto, I've got a couple of threads on the subject.

 

It lives in a home built "silent" box. Neighbours don't complain, but do turn up for TV and beer if the power is off for long when the "crazy farang" house is still lit up like a Christmas tree.

 

EDIT If you really are using that often you should be looking at a diesel rather than petrol unit. Of course they are more costly to buy, but burn less of a cheaper fuel (and they will run on old cooking oil).

 

EDIT 2 Do not be tempted by one of the really cheap 2-stroke units, they can be very quiet but they are thirsty and can be unreliable.

If the Honda Inverter  EU10i or Honda Inverter EU20i back up portable generator will supply enough peak demand for your Thailand home computer, refrigerator and fans you will be served well. The traditional petrol Honda ER2500 generator or Honda EC8500CXS are built to a higher standard than "paste on any name label" Chinese generators which have little to no spare parts in Thailand. Buriram has two Honda Power products dealers and it is worth the time of expat who is considering a emergency back up power generator to at least see and price genuine Honda generators in Thailand.  I'll go on record and state "cheap and good" are not synonymous realistic with power generators in Thailand unless you fancy many repairs and disappointments with lack of spare parts. Just phone the warranty phone number on the printed in China brochure and check the price of any spare part. Honda is a first class operation with real stock of spare parts in Thailand.

My present petrol deal is 11 years old and had no major issues until today but perhaps it can repair for a reasonable cost.

Run one of these for 12 hours a night for 4 years pretty much no problems

These are 750cc single cylinder water cooled engine attached to 7.5 kw generator water cooled.

they are a little noisy we have now changed the generator to a slightly bigger one and put bigger cogs on it so the engine runs slower and not as noisy,,,we have had it 8 years the kuboto engines are bullet proof.....paid 64,000 bht for it.

our one now has petrol tank removed and frame been chopped a bit to fit bigger generator on it.

it used to use about 500 to 600 bht a night diesel got it down to around 200 bht a night now with the bigger genny and bigger drive wheel.

I figure that all told it will end up including engine, generator, electrical work, cut and weld etc at coming up to around 100,000 baht unless I misread it and about 64,000 baht is the total cost.

Nope you can buy the complete unit as shown in picture includes engine generator and battery the frame also comes on wheels so can wheel around for 64000 bht ,but I think they may be a little to noisy as back up supply for a house.

these kuboto engines are used all over Issan they make tractors from them,you can pick up just the engine for around 40,000 bht then buy a generator separately and get it all welded up to a frame.
