Trang people want isthmus canal studied

TRANG: -- Trang citizens on Wednesday urged the government to conduct a feasibility study on a long-mooted canal linking the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea.

The call came at a seminar held at Ban Laemsai Pier in Si Kao district’s Tambon Khao Mai Kaew, with about 50 local residents in attendance.

Most voiced support for the so-called Klong Thai 9A project, formerly known as the Kra Isthmus canal, saying it would revive the provincial economy and help put an end to illegal fishing, since people would turn to other businesses once the canal was built.

The residents said they wanted the government consider the project in earnest and form a panel to study the feasibility.

The Kong Thai 9A project, if approved, would entail twin parallel canals crossing Krabi, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla, a distance of 140 kilometres. The cost has been estimated at Bt1.68 trillion and the construction period likely six years.

This Governement and future elected governements will never allow the south to have a divide like this.

It may not be the only reason, but it is definitely a consideration that is high on the list.

LOL ... double that and you'll be nearer to what it would actually cost, and how long the construction would actually take.

I've always wondered why estimates are always 50% (sometimes less) of the truth. Who is fooling who, and why ? This is another field where experience seems to be totally useless and irrelevant.

Is this common sense telling you this or an amulet salesperson??

Influential people bought land up in the area of the canal, which was

first proposed a long time ago,it's been brought out and dusted off

several times,as they want to get a return on the investment, but the

past Governments never seemed to have the money, maybe this one

can interest the Chinese in investing in it.

beat me too it. actually without the canal the subs cant reach to other side of thailand as they cant carry enough diesel.  hope the can get every third shovel for free when they buy them from china.

there are gas stations/pumps along the "road" going from Sattahiip to eg Phuket.

And this canal will accomplish...what?

A small shortcut for Chinese ships loaded with Chinese cargo headed to the EU?

Temporary jobs for Thai ditch diggers, maybe.

It protects China from potential US sanctions enforced by US ally Singapore. Specifically Iranian and Saudi oil enroute to China. Your next question, Why would Thailand support that?  Because China would pay for the canal and their would be financial benefit to Thailand.  in 2012 the Panama Canal netted 1.28 billion profit.  I don't think the ditch diggers would get the lions share.

A fee for every crossing... It would save about 1,000 kms of distance.  How much time and diesel would it save to avoid making that 1,000kms of distance?  If it's a two way Canal you have lots of ways of maximizing the use of the water too.

I know this proposal isn't across the Thai Malay border, but a side benefit may be increased security, as it will be a very robust "border" protecting lands north of any proposed canal.... perhaps making policing Thai assets south of the canal easier.

just a thought

Hilarious. Every time this comes up the line on the map is in a different place.

Are they aware that this line goes right across a mountain range? And in fact right through Khao Pu-Khao Ya National Park, the most sensitive and inaccessible part of the chain of mountains that runs right down this part of Thailand?

And have they considered that it will turn the Ko Lanta coast into a tanker parking lot while they queue up to go through?

The topic is brought up every now and again just to make the government look dynamic. It will come up again in another year's time with the line drawn in a different place.

no way Singapore will allow it. they will do whatever it takes to keep their monopoly.

They should allow Singapore to build it & run it for 99 years (like the US Panama Canal).

Then it would be done on time and under budget probably/maybe.

Will never happen I know.
