Myanmar worker faces murder charge in Songkhla
By The Nation

SONGKHLA: -- A drinking party to welcome a just-arrived compatriot to a Songkhla campsite of Myanmar labourers apparently ended in murder early Friday.

Bang Klam district police deputy inspector Pol Capt Somchai Srijiew said a man identified only as Thantho, 40, was arrested in his room in the construction workers’ living quarters. He is accused of killing compatriot Maw, 35, with a blow to the head.

Somchai said Thantho, who appeared drunk and did not try to flee, admitted to striking the younger man.

Other migrant workers told police the two had been drinking in Thantho’s room since Thursday evening. It was Thantho’s way of welcoming the newcomer to Songkhla.

The workers said they’d heard the men laughing at first, but later quarrelling over who knew better about working in Songkhla.
