Beware fake Thai banknotes in Phuket

PHUKET: -- A curry shop vendor has warned about fake banknotes in the Phuket area after a customer tried to pass off a 500 baht note as real.

But at least she got her money back after confronting the customer.

The shop owner posted a picture of the fake purple note on Facebook under the name Kawoat Mickey.

She told Thai Rath reporters that a customer in her shop had paid a 60 baht bill with the note and she had given 440 baht change.

But she soon thought something was wrong with it and asked the customer for another. They said they only had one and went off in a huff at the suggestion it was fake.

However closer inspection revealed the note was not a good copy at all - it had no watermark and was even smaller than a real one.

A bank employee customer of the curry shop confirmed that it was fake.

So the owner sent someone to find the person who gave it to her who has a shop in a mall nearby and they agree to return the money.

Meanwhile she added that another customer said that she had been given a fake 1,000 baht note as payment for a seafood meal recently prompting fears that there are many fake notes in circulation.

Fakes in this neck of the woods, that will be a first then

It's amazing, how there just managed to be a bank employee in the curry shop, who was able to verify it as a snide note. Amazing!!!!

I handed a new 1000 note to a travel agent in Pattaya for a reservation, and he sent his wife to the bank to confirm it was real, they must have changed the design that year because he said he had never seen 1 like it, he was middle eastern but his wife was Thai.

So don't call the police.  Let them go off and try some where else?
