Does anyone know If a couple ( Australian and Thai ) marry in Thailand is the marriage recognised by the Australian government ?

The marriage being one legally conducted here in Thailand ( not the Buddhist ceremony ).

Additionaly, what is the procedure? I've heard you have to go to Bangkok .

thanks for any advice

Just out of curiousity, don't need foreign marriages need to be registred in the your city/countries registry to be fully legal?

Just a note UK ers.

A legal marriage in Thailand with the issue of a marriage certificate is recognized in the UK it does not have to be registered in the UK.

You have to visit your embassy, get a piece of paper saying that you're not married back home, then get that piece of paper translated into Thai by an authorized translator only, then get that stamped, then you can visit the office to get legally married, and while they approve dozens of Thais around you, they will fully scrutinize your application before rubber stamping it.

First you need an affirmation to marry (can be downloaded online check your embassy web site) notarized by you Embassy. You need to take proof of divorce of you were married before or a death certificatte if your widdowed.

Once you have this it needs to be translated to Thai then stamped by the MFA.

This can be done many ways if you live in or near bangkok get it translated and take it along to MFA yourself. Or as i did gave it to a visa type agent who got it translated and sent it up to MFA cost me 2k well worth it. Had it back in a week. Then go to your chosen Amphur to get married some require 2 witnesses some dont. Very informal affair. You get your marriage certificate  (2 one each) and all other docs there and then. They the amphur also offered me a translation service 2.5k the translate all docs to do with marriage from thai to English again stamped at MFA. Used the translated copies a few times in UK over the years. But as stated a thai marriage is recognised in UK dont need to register. Your Embassy should be able to tell you if ots the same in Oz.

I read on the Australian embassy web site

It is mandatory that both the Embassy and the Thai authorities be presented with documentary evidence confirming that the Australian citizen is free to marry. '

In my case , having NEVER been married , do I need to obtain a ' single status' document from births deaths and marriages in Australia to present to Australian embassy first ?

If youve never been married i do belive no paper work is required. It states if divorced/widowed. Then proof is needed.

What is the situation if both are not Thai Nationals ?

Say one from Phillipines and one from Oz getting married in Thailand.

Both need an affirmation to marry document from their respective embassies and proceed with the procedure as explained by jeab1980 in post 6.

Maybe not because when you apply for tourist visa stating your wife there was no problem

Wrong I had to go & get a clearance but after all was done at Amphur I'm positive that there was no need to go back to Embassy & certainly know that i didn't have to do anything back in Auss ( Would like to keep far away from that Gov )

My brother married here 3 months ago never been married before. He got the affarmation to marry from UK embassy in BKK. Asked him if he had to bring or get any proof of not being married. What proof he said how do you get proof you have never married! Good point says I. No.problems at Amphur all went well.

Understand but the point is that you still need affirmation from embassy & this will prove all of the above - never been married, Divorce is ligit & ect . He doesn't need to prove anything that is why you need the embassy clearance which proves it all, then just trot along to Amphor
