KORAT: -- Two people were injured when a tanker carrying 42,000 litres of diesel oil overturned in the Wang Nam Khiao district of Nakhon Ratchasima province on Thursday.

Police said the accident happened at 11.18am at the Makud Wan Curve on Highway No 304 in Ban Huay Namkhem in Tambon Udomsup.

Initially, the section of the road where the oil had spilled was closed to traffic. Later, police cleared one lane for vehicles while waiting for another oil tanker to transfer the remaining oil and the overturned tanker could be salvaged.

And that on an easy path of this route.

Not too steep, four lanes (2/2).

It's long that I drove there and watched the rusty, stinking trucks fighting uphill.

But I really had some hope that drivers and trucks for such stuff are a bit better than the rest.

Oops,  for sure something went wrong for this truck to flip, nice to see the diesel just flowing away

and not a ton of people around trying to get any in buckets etc.

Geezer

Most of these fuel tankers owned by the major players are usually well maintained and professionally driven, at least from those I have seen operating here in Thailand..

In this instance would speed on a winding road be a factor?

And is it normal for a tanker to discharge fuel through the top of the tank when overturned,

^^ No standard containment measures in case of an accident. Why does a vehicle overturn on a dry road??  Driver error.

This particular bend has claimed around a dozen loaded petrol/oil tankers since the road was opened,it is a little sharper than the rest and has claimed a few lives too when they have caught fire

From pictures it is a bit uncertain to say.

But it looks like it "cracked open" on two small areas (bad weldseam)?

Not sure.
