Officials are preparing to demolish more than 500 newly built dwellings in the Angkor archaeological park. Apsara, the authority responsible for managing the park, and the Interior Ministry’s department of heritage protection, said people had set up homes in 523 locations from May 20 to June 2.

Police met Aspara officials on Wednesday to discuss action to evict those responsible and demolish the homes.  Aspara spokesman Long Kosal said the constructions were all within zones one and two of the park, while some were dangerously close to the Banteay Kdei temple.

“We agreed that it’s necessary to demolish these dwellings as soon as possible. We have already set a schedule for the work, but I cannot specify when it will take place,” he said.  Zones one and two of Siem Reap province’s Angkor Archaeological Park are designated as protected areas, because they contain ancient remains that require expert preservation.
