North Road set for high season demolition to bury power lines

PATTAYA:--The Provincial Electricity Authority will begin ripping up North Road in the heart of high season to move overhead power and communications wires below ground.

Pattaya City Councilman Sriviset Rodarun told a June 8 meeting with officials from the city, military, police and utility companies that the project will take a year from the time the contract is signed with the contractor in December.

The 157-million-baht North Road project, which will run to the Dolphin Roundabout, is the first phase in a 3-billion-baht overhaul of the Pattaya electrical system, part of the PEA’s 11.7-billion-baht upgrade of its infrastructure in Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Nakhon Ratchasima by 2021.

In all, 46 kilometers of overhead wiring will be moved below ground, with the second phase aimed at doing the same work on Central Road. The Pattaya overhaul also includes construction of underground distribution systems, high-voltage distribution systems with overhead ground wires, and communications support work.

Three different voltage systems will be installed in North Pattaya: A 115-kilovolt system will be installed under the road from the beginning of North Road at Sukhumvit Road to the Terminal 21 shopping mall, a distance of 1.8 kilometers.

I guess this is an attempt to finish the works before Terminal 21 opens.

Construction to start at beginning of high season? Councilman Sriviset is a genius! :clap2:

The electrical and other utility systems no doubt need a lot of work.  But I wonder when and if they will ever do a proper sewage and grey water setup and actually make the beach swimmable.

Will they move all the old overhead cables as well? And what is a hi voltage distribution system with overhead ground wires?

Starting in December this year.

That will surely add to the high season fun.

Seems like the whole mess will be moved underground.

Overhead ground wires?

Also not sure what this means.

It will be interesting to see what happens when flooding occurs with all these powerlines in the ground......I am buying myself a rubber dinghy

The tunnel will likely be open then, heaven forbid I don't have any works impacting my trips into town.

North Rd will be a mess, business owners park along it and huge coaches  assume priority going to places there.

Overhead ground wires will be the 'shield wire' that sits above the three  HT cables, they are to protect the HT cables from lightning strikes.

Good place to start. Maybe they'll go on to do Klang, Tai, and 2nd Rd. But it ain't cheap. At least Terminal 21 will help tax revenues a bit.

They also seem to have started; and stopped; on 2nd Road just past Klang heading to Terminal 21.

Terminal 21 is driving; in part; the re-development of the Amari site. 3 hotels will be the end result. The Garden Wing and Tavern by the Sea are now demolished.
