Seven inmates of Samut Prakan Central Prison (Klong Dan) received education certificates on Tuesday after completing vocational courses behind bars, and another 177 are expected to complete their studies this academic year.

Prison director Krit Wongwet, presiding at the presentation ceremony, said Samut Prakan Technical College assisted in arranging the programme, in which inmates have since 2015 been able to earn a Certificate in Vocational Education (Por Wor Chor) or Technical Diploma (Por Wor Sor).

The seven inmates receiving Por Wor Chor certificates on Tuesday had completed studies in business computer use.

Fifty-one inmates are currently taking the same course and another 28 are pursuing Por Wor Chor certificates in fine arts, 38 in information technology and 35 in marketing. Twenty-five more are seeking Por Wor Sor diplomas in business computers.

College director Thweesak Kiewthong said the programme, in which the college’s teachers lecture at the prison, gives the inmates the chance to make constructive use of their time behind bars and equips them with skills with which to earn a decent living after release.

They will join the workforce and contribute to the country’s economic development, he said.

The college plans to offer a short course in motorcycle repairs soon, Thweesak added, with a private firm ready to provide the bikes.

Excellent news. Having worked with offenders in the UK for 36 years, I am convinced that courses like these can increase confidence and self worth, unable offenders to obtain employment when released and get them out of poverty. Many offenders have had little education and simple literacy and numeracy courses in prison or community pay dividends. Congratulations to all involved in this project.

Thank you for some positive news that makes sense!  I hope they can get enough sleep while sleeping on top of other inmates

SIL did a pastrycook course in her last couple of years. Last I heard has her own shop and doing well. Definitely a step up from security guard cum car park attendant.
