Commerce Minister orders response to falling pineapple price

 

 

BANGKOK, 21 June 2017 (NNT) – The Minister of Commerce has ordered relevant agencies to address the issue of dropping pineapple prices and to assist growers in Prachuapkirikan, Pitsanulok and Uttaradit. 

Minister of Commerce Abhiradee Tantraporn has said that initially local commerce offices will build ties between pineapple farmers and markets to help them better disperse their produce. Retail points to be targeted will extend from fresh markets to department stores and newer outlets. 

At the same time, the Department of Internal Trade will hold a discussion with canned pineapple manufacturers to directly buy up stocks to prop up their price. Pineapple prices are currently between 4.50 and 5 baht per kilogram. 

Over the past 3 years, droughts in the country have depressed the supply of pineapple, driving their prices up to as high as 10 baht per kilogram. An early rainy season this year has however increased crop yields to over 2.04 million tons, or by 11.14 percent, cutting the value of the fruit.

Price high due to drought so every  man and his dog plant more in normal season to get rich quick.

In developed countries farmers look at international  forecasts on the crop they intend to plant and then set their coming season plans on the forecast supply situation. Maybe the esteemed minister should do some home work before the horse has bolted rather than try and manipulate the market to solve a simple problem. They could invoke 44 and instruct everyone to eat one pineapple a day. Problem solved

Saw somebody here in Chiang mai selling them off a pickup for B20 .Not sure if that was each or per kilo ?

Really made me wonder how they can earn money with such a price.

Surely per kg and ripoff.

 

Looks like the time is ripe for a government sponsored  "Pineapple Buying Scheme" . Pineapple middlemen will be delighted while growers will be apprehensive.

Of course, total immunity for everyone aboard the ship of fools.

That is and has always been the problem in Thailand, in every business.

 

Look he made good money last year with pineapples, because of certain circumstances which they fail to see, so lets all grow pineapples this year.

 

Where I live everyone was growing for years that stuff they make gasohol from. This year everyone is growing pineapples.

 

Anyone surprised why the prices drop like a rock?

So they don't grow pineapples in your "red village"?

See some Thai on Facebook in Lampang ,offering them for B5 a kilo if you buy 200 kg or more.

My wife and BIL used my truck to go to Sukhothai area for a funeral. There was a glut of mangoes, and they came back loaded with medium size just ripening @ B1/kg. Sold half to fruit shops, washed and sold the rest on the streets for B10/kg.

Hard to understand why there aren't more canneries around with different crops going cheap most of the year.
