Thai women named "porn"

Featured Replies

Am I the only one who finds it kind of hilarious when seeing women's names like "Porni," "Pornmarij" etc? lol

Maybe you are, maybe not. What do you find hilarious about a name or a nickname in one language that has an entirely different meaning when translated literally into your own language ?

I believe that 'porn' means 'blessed', or something similar. Yes, it seems a little odd to English speakers - but you get used to it.

I hear that Thais are amused by people named Jim.

No sweat.  It's a common mistake.  Thais usually pronounce it as "pon".

Porn is pretty common. Titiporn sometimes seen.

Turdsack is a surname I've come across.

But not to be compared with the Japanese PM ,

Noburu Takeshita .

my wife has a younger cousin porn ('pon') and she is a pleasant person and has been helpful at our house when all the children were young and I was away at work...the kids respect their aunt porn...

she has two daughters of her own who are now both approaching the end of high school and I have no doubt that they will continue on to college...very capable girls with an easy and pleasant effrontery: 'do you think that I'm smart, uncle tutsi?...' ie, I challenge you to demonstrate otherwise...they have captured my heart...

I have a good friend who was called Porn, but when she married and moved to Scandanavia she changed to Pon, out of respect for her husband.

Willy

Dick

Fanny

Gaye

Just a few popular Western names in their time.

And, who could forget Mike Litoris.

(I did not make it up).

Jacks Dawson's surname in the 1997 film Titanic raised a few chuckles in Thailand at the time. It sounds like 'small penis' in Thai.

If I end up having a daughter in the West I'm going to name her Pinkpussyporn

She should've just left her name as Porn. Should provide a good ice breaker when starting a conversation.

School finished early today?

The name Porn/Pon refers to the same Thai word, which means ‘blessing’.

There is no ‘r’ sound in that Thai word.  The vowel sound is ‘law’ (US), lot (UK).

The English spelling is different, depending on the pronunciation system used for transliteration.

US English system = Pon

UK English system = Porn

Another good example is the city of Udon/Udorn Thani.  (There is no 'r' sound in the name of that city)

Leaving the ‘r’ out would cut out a lot of confusion and bad jokes.

Back in the days when people still used "internet cafes," I had a Thai girlfriend named Amporn.  We were at an internet cafe in the US, and she went to check her e-mail on one of the computers.  However, it wouldn't let her log in!  Her name was part of her e-mail username, and the owners had some sort of gatekeeping software set up on the computers in their cafe so the word "porn" couldn't be typed in, in any form. :cheesy:

Exactly, it's said and written in Thai as "Pon". Have no idea why Thais decided to add an "r" to it to make it sex related. Thais have a dirty mind indeed :)

The English spelling has nothing to do with US & UK English. It's the way Thais have decide to spell it.

When I first visited Thailand, I saw a shop in Patong Beach called "Porn Shop". I got all excited and went inside, but they were selling clothes. I kept walking in and out trying to figure out where the "porn" was stashed.

The Thais that use 'or' are following a UK-based pronunciation system.  The official Thai government pronunciation system uses 'o', not 'or'.

You have to ask the staff about the porn stash as the nudie mags & vids are stashed behind the counter in case the cops come into the store.

I think porn means something to do with certain magazines. I'm sure you get some in Thai.

I go to sleep looking at Porn and wake up looking at Porn.
