EC says disagreement on organic laws will not delay election

BANGKOK, 10th July 2017 (NNT) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) says the disagreements over the draft organic laws on the EC and political parties, between the electoral organ and the Constitution Drafting Commission will not delay the next general election.

EC Chairman Suphachai Somcharoen said today that the next general election would take place according to the country's road map, given that there already is a solution provided in the constitution to ensure that the election is not affected despite the disagreement between the two sides.

The EC is set to ask the Constitutional Court to review certain sections in regard to the roles and responsibilities of the electoral body after a joint committee on the draft bill had resolved that the election commission law does not violate the constitution.

However, Suphachai said it is still unclear whether the charter court will review the entire law or only the clauses the EC believes are unconstitutional.
