Things you don't do in Thailand because you know better

Featured Replies

There are some obvious things that don't need to be said, like anything involving lèse-majesté laws. But what are some of the things that people commonly do here, that seasoned expats wouldn't do.

I'll give two easy ones: Rent a jet ski or go parasailing.

Take any notice of electricians waffle....

dont try and catch snakes on ur own

never lend money to  anyone

^ I'm going to assume you don't have any mates here!. It is who you lend it to, not where you are!

Don't yell and raise voice if you have any disagreement about just about anything, a bill dispute, bad service, or whatever.  It is not perceived well.  Use some language to get your point across as necessary, but yelling rarely helps.

Don't pay for a room without seeing it first.  There are exceptions, but too often you pay for a room and get the room near the noisy elevator, over the motorcycle parking lot, facing the main street, etc.

Don't hop in a cab or a tuk tuk without fare agreed first.

Don't invest a lot of hard money in Thailand.  While things can be bought you will constantly be at risk and a target.  The risk reward benefits assessment is up to you

Hide all your tools and don't lone them out...

assume the smile is genuine

Ask a Thai person for directions.

Dont assume a "builder" is one because he says so ! Same for any "trade".

Dont believe all you are told.

It probably isnt her cousin !

There is no sick buffalo ! or sick relatives etc.

Go snorkelling without a dive flag and lookout.

Don't  ask the police for help - or any official.

On our first trip to Europe, one day we could not find our hotel. I said to my wife "I will go and ask that policeman over there".

My wife just about freaked out....

Never ask for information.

Always make sure you have all necessary information beforehand.

Then present the information and ask for what you need.

Better still, let your Thai wife deal with the incompetent staff.

She is better at fake smiling and grovelling then you!

Use a motorbike taxi. Never ride a motorbike. Never give money to beggars.

Wai to children, monks, and soi dogs.

never ride in a tuk tuk ....

if in a tuk tuk ...  never agree to go see some gemstones

if in a tuk tuk in a gemstone shop ...   never agree to go parasailing. :shock1:

Jump off a balcony.

1.   Rarely use a motorcycle taxi as I live upcountry now.

2 .  I have 2 motorbike which I don't ride so much but I still ride quite happily.

3.   I always give money to beggars especially the local 1 or 2 up here as I used to when I lived in BKK.

Sorry if you don't.

PS Beggars are people too.

Do not get in a fight with a Thai.
Don't pay for a house registered in a woman's name. Do not open a business.

Don't ask the sales staff in Home Pro etc for any technical information on products.

Don't even assume that anything you see on display is actually in stock.

Never agree an appointment time with a Thai.

They will always turn up hours or days late.

Pontificate.

Never assume you have "consumer rights" many things have no guarantee many have just 7 days !!

Even if you get a guarantee dont assume it will actually mean anything when the time comes.

Insist on asking "why?" a store or other place doesn't have something, or a regulation/policy is what it is. The person you are asking almost certainly had nothing to do with the decision, no idea of the answer and will just make up something to placate you.

If you have disregarded the above -  never believe the stated reason. It was made up to avoid the person being asked having to say they didn't know.

And of you have ignored both of the above,  do not then start propogating the supposed reason as fact, that is how rumors start.

If you are 99% sure they understood the message, focus on the 1%

Never expect to get a reply to an E mail you have sent to a Thai Company.
