MAE HONG SON: -- Police are investigating the cause of a fire that engulfed a 20-year-old teak residence for monks at Wat Pa Pha in Mae Hong Son's Sob Mei district on Sunday night.

No one was injured.

The blaze started at about 8.30pm and also burnt a century-old Buddha statue made of fragrant wood and some Bt100,000 in cash donations.

Abbot Phra Kru Anurak Pattanakhun told police that he and other disciples were performing an evening prayer at the ubosot when they heard someone shout that there was a fire.

He said the whole building was on fire and the monks tried to extinguish the blaze using buckets of water while waiting for firefighters to arrive.

The blaze spread fast as the whole building and statues inside it were made of wood.

The building was engulfed within 30 minutes.

Well with all the goings on in temples regarding money, there are questions needing asked about this fire.

First why was the money left in a wooden building, and not somewhere safe?

Second strange it happened when all the monks where else where.

Money probably not there in the first place.

Now the monks will be begging people for more donations to replace that what was supposedly burned, and donations to rebuild.

Probably arson to cover up the money having already vanished.
