PHUKET: -- Parasail operators at Kata and Karon beaches will continue their self-imposed ban until they have cleared a full safety review and training, while officials have ordered all parasail operators to use “lockable clips” to hold people in the harnesses while up to 100 metres in the air.

 

The news came at the Karon Municipality Office today (July 17), where parasail operators began their mandatory safety review and training as ordered by Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong on Friday (July 14).

 

The safety review was ordered in after death of 70-year-old Australian tourist Roger Hussey in a fall at Kata Beach last Wednesday (July 12) made international headlines.

This would seem to confirm that it was not the harness straps that failed, but rather the clip to the tow line was unclipped or failed  in some manner. So he must fallen while wearing the harness. Better reporting would have saved pages of speculation here. 

 

It should be impossible to undo a clip under load, even one with a poor design. Very tragic.

wont make any difference to anything.  back to business as usual next week, it it is not already. even section 44 cant change anything in thailand.

If proper clip is needed, seems this use of faulty equipment might be useful in wrongful death suit... oh wait, this is Thailand. Never mind

Good to see the Thai's are starting to act and apply remedies as the foreigners do, I will give the 10 out 10 for this, hope this starts being applied to other areas, the list too long, but by the end of the century they just might get there ?

The clip probably got knocked loose by the guy riding on top of the guest. They jump up and down like monkeys and damage everything.

I wonder did the "Chief of Special Warfare" happen to notice the Thai boy dangling in the parachute rigging above the victims head?  Or, is that merely standard safety protocol?

 But, if it was clip failure [ by whatever means] and he was separated from the towline how did the chute, with the crewman then stay up?

Because the victim was clipped onto the chutes tow lines, and the crewmen was on the tow line. The victim was separated from the tow line.
