PHUKET: -- The Phuket Lifeguard Service and professional lifesavers from Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) today launched a joint-project to train Phuket lifeguards and provide training to members of the public as well as those who work in the tourism industry along Phuket’s main tourist beaches.

The campaign will also see a series of Kid’s Water Safety Training events on Phuket to highlight the need for greater awareness of beach safety on the island.

Twelve Australian volunteers have been specially brought in to train local lifeguards on each of the main tourist beaches around the island.

Surf Life Saving Australia has been doing this for many years.  Buying equipment, training and funding thai life savers.  Money from aussie donations has been poured in and even funded the construction of a club house with equipment a few years back but construction never started as funds ran out after the 1st committee meeting ended, it was a very expensive lunch.

And about time too ! Aussie lifesavers are probably the best in the world, when they,re not on the Bundy !

Great news, let's hope the local officials will see the need to put more funds into lifeguards and life saving equipment as every year it's like pulling teeth to get a small budget for this most important aspect of a beach holiday resort.  In the past local officials haven't seen the need to spend money on this as there is no money in it personally for them.

I'm sure the only reason this is even getting slight notice is the Chinese gov't is putting pressure on the Thai gov't to try to ensure not so many of their citizens die in this country via drowning.

IIRC, in years past the local gov't has turned down volunteer help to train local lifeguards.

Stable door, horse, closing, bolt, after.

Lol.

First thing the need to tech the lifeguards is to keep their cell phones in their kit bags, you see them all over the beaches on their phones.........but I agree they are the best teachers, they come to the North Shore Hawaii  every Winter for the Big Wave competitions.
