LONDON (Reuters) - The free movement of European Union citizens to Britain will continue for at least two years after Brexit as part of a transitional deal, British media reported on Friday.

 

The first full round of talks to extricate Britain from the EU ended on Thursday with few compromises and differences over how to protect the future of expatriate citizens.

 

Britain is due to leave the EU by the end of March 2019, after a June 23 referendum last year in which many Britons backed Brexit to restrict immigration and regain powers from Brussels.

 

Some senior members of Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet, including finance minister Philip Hammond, have been pushing for a transitional period designed to protect the economy and reassure businesses.

 

As part of Hammond's plans, EU citizens would still be able to move to Britain for up to two years, The Times newspaper reported on Friday. The Guardian newspaper cited a senior cabinet source as saying free movement could last for up to four years.

 

A spokeswoman at May's office did not offer an immediate comment when contacted by Reuters on Friday.

Border restrictions yes just like here in Thailand....where do you get 30% decline from.. we voted out because we want out...

Yes, and with such a convincing majority, 52-48. I think if there were to be a do-over, these figures would be quite different now.

Some of you want out but many have changed their mind about that. I suppose it might depend on how it impacts on your daily life.  I think a 30% decline is being conservative, especially in the early days if you have a no deal Brexit.  However that isn't going to happen with the Conservatives doing the deal with the DUP.  They have said they would never vote for a no deal solution and they hold the deciding vote.

This not a horse race.  When a vote is won by less than 5% then it is a very close call.  A win it was but re-run it today and see what the result is.  It would be good to hear the Brexiteers saying "Go on then, try it and you will see that the leave vote is still the winner".  Of course that is never going to happen as they know very well that a re-run would give a resounding vote to remain. 

 

Anyway this is just sour grapes on my side.  The divorce will continue for now but I fear that the Brexiteers are going to be bitterly disappointed by the end result and so will the Remoaners.  No winners here.

You shouldn't say that Grousey. It's a tad rude. And I hope your not in favor of criteria for right to vote? 

 

There were some very well educated people, Boris Johnson, Gove, Farage all lobbying for Brexit - and all driven by their own agendas.

Some academics and business leaders also supported it. Of course many academics, business people and politicians, seedy and not so seedy, also supported remain.

 

The issue is that the referendum was described as "advisory" during the legislation's parliamentary passage, enacted without any rules appertaining to necessary winning margins, and the voter turnout wasn't 100% or even close.

 

The fact many chose to believe the fairy tale idea that we could simply "leave", save all this money and pump it into the NHS, education etc; stop all immigration and send swathes back out, and that would cure unemployment and crime, and that it could all be done without the slightest difficulty in a couple of months or less reflects the increased influence social media and increased communications has on people so dire for better things that they'll snatch at any old straw and put blame on old phobias.

 

The absolute ineptitude of the Tories, who want to go back to the social paradise of the industrial revolution is only mirrored by Jeremy and his militant tendency type cronies who think Venezuela is a socialist paradise and people there so lucky. 

 

Very worrying, especially as Vince Cable starts to sound sensible!

Not some of us wanted out THE MAJORITY WANTED OUT....people haven't changed their minds..we owe Europe nothing we paid with blood in both world wars....
