BANGKOK: -- The cabinet on Tuesday (July 25) decided to allocate 1.8 billion baht from the Central Fund to promote the use of rubber by various government bodies.

The fund is to be distributed among three ministries:

1.5 billion baht for the Ministry of Defence

164.4 million baht for the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives

135 million baht for the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The Defence Ministry plans to use the 1.5 billion baht fund to purchase rubber mattresses; build multi-purpose lawns using rubber as raw material, use rubber in road construction and in flooring ponds in rice fields.

84% for MoD

9% for Agriculture

7% for Tourism.

Sounds fair!

Oh, I see - MoD needs to get money to buy a mountain of Latex Mattresses for it's inactive soldiers.

That side of politics doesn't forget their natural constituency; but when the other side does it...it's scandalous, negligent, criminal, etc.

But no one will notice, right?

Maybe new soldier uniform design.....

you see a similarity with the story about the cops giving themselves a reward for catching a criminal.

1.8 billion? To promote use by government? How about just telling them "use more rubber"? Meanwhile, Ying Luck is getting hammered for rice scheme.... ah the consistency.

At least it makes sure they have the support of the rubber farmers.

If they don't like you just buy them and let others [the tax payer] pay for it.

Later you just run around and tell everybody how much everybody loves you.

It's insane.

And if you are not accountable for anything like this (so called) Government then it's outright dangerous !

Rubber and Thailand....the possibilities are endless....bar girls...fetish......

I'll have to tell the missus about her new rubber lined rice fields. perhaps we can deepen them and add diving boards? I guess it will be a relief not to have to mow the rubber lawns.

They probably gonna use it for rubber bullets to shoot Shinawatra supporters..............however from history it's obvious they like to use the real thing for that.

That's nearly 45 million US dollars given to the MOD ..... that would be a scandalous amount in a first world country..... just another junta day here I guess.

And how about distributing some budget to the salaries of the Thai Police and Immigration, under the strict condition to stop some questionnable requests for "tea money"?:wai:

Nattaporn Jatusripitak, an adviser to the Commerce Minister, said that the allocation of this small fund was just a short-term measure.  For the long-term solution, he said, the Rubber Authority of Thailand was assigned to conduct researches and to explore ways to come up with new innovations which rely on rubber as production material.

So 1.8 billion baht thrown out as another knee-jerk amateur reaction to a persistent economic problem by the Thai military with no strategic plan or connection to increasing (in this case) market value of rubber.

The Thai military economic policies are like its military war strategies - take short term action to hide from long term consequences.

The Defence Ministry plans to use the 1.5 billion baht fund to purchase rubber mattresses; build multi-purpose lawns using rubber as raw material, use rubber in road construction and in flooring ponds in rice fields.

What exactly does ANY of that have to do with defense?    Rhetorical question.

Never mind, it's just pocket money for defense dept.  Most will end up in the pockets of various generals.  Meanwhile, in other news, Prayut has confiscated Yingluck's bank accounts.

1.8 billion baht that will just disappear into a dark hole never to be seen again. Accountability and audit are two words unfamiliar to any Thai government.

Corruption in Thailand has a voracious appetite that needs constant feeding. By the time financial administrators are finished with it there will be little benefit for the rubber farmers.
