I may have read this wrong, I was under the assumption they had gone out in the daytime but if this an evening/night dive then the ships commander must have been suicidal.

Quite. The quote from that website is; 'Four members of a group who headed out from Bangkok to learn scuba diving died Wednesday night...' That would read as though the boat was still out in the sea at night. Apparently on a three day course so what were they doing out there at night?

Anyone living near the gulf will tell you how rough the sea is at the moment, why would anyone want to be out with anything smaller than the Queen Mary?. 

Probably a competent seafarer at the helm should suffice

Yes the picture in the Daily news article is of the Chokthara2 (a white boat approx 40' long). Looks like a fairly decent boat so I'm guessing the sea state was quite bad! RIP those people that passed away.

I've got a idea, lets take a boat out at night while tropical depression Sonca is crossing over Thailand.

It was a scuba diving boat. The engine failed so another boat was called to tow it back to the mainland. Whilst towing the rope snapped and the stricken vessel went down fast. Everyone who was in the saloon area drowned. They were all Thai, instructors and students. Rip to those who lost their lives.

I don't think that it's exactly a "rant"! It's a valid point if Thai "tourists" are being included in the official figures implying that they are visitors from another country.

 

And you conveniently  totally ignored the first part of the post, which also makes a very valid point.

Yes it's valid in a TAT mission/press statement about increasing tourism but a news article regarding the deaths of 5 people!

Thanks for giving us the reality of this tragedy, now we can stop making guesses but the reporting was awful if that was the case.

The problem is that it wouldn't be mentioned in a TAT statement about increasing tourism!

Hmmm but the problem is when you trivialise tragedies I'm having a hard time accepting your words are sincere. Regardless of them being thai or tourists they were people and the use of the words thai and tourists seems to serve your P2 and you knew that hence you used those words as opposed to the more shorter more apt term which is people.

Obviously the crew did not get the passengers in a safe position to be rescued...

 

every man man for themselves approach probably took place when the boat started to sink and people jumped overboard or should have been instructed to jump overboard...

It's a big vague at the minute regarding the towing but basically the boat lost its engines and went down. There was another boat there trying to help before the rescue team could get there.

Who is trivialising tragedies? I am only using the words that are in the headlines of the 2 articles about this tragedy, and pointing out that it suits your "P2" to ignore the first part of a post that is totally sympathetic to the tragedy, but emphasise the latter part as a "rant" criticising the TAT. 

 

The original headline:-

"Five tourists were missing as a desperate air and sea rescue was mounted off Chumporn last night.

 

A later article headline:-

"Five Thai tourists drown when snorkeling boat sinks in Chumphon Bay"

You deliberately ignore part of a post, and then blatantly emphasise the part that you disagree with - this is in disregard of Forum Rules i.e.:-

It's just common sense.. why would anyone go into the sea during storm like situation. That too at night. I don't think those uneducated people the captains or the crew are to be blamed.. they just need some extra bucks .. would those tourists do the same back in their home countries.. it's has simply become a norm to blame on the lack of safety in tourism.. be it boats or any other.. if these tourists know that before hand then why would they venture into that..

The tourists were Thai.

They were all Thai on the last day of a 3 day scuba diving photography trip, it was a liveaboard so the weather may have been ok when they set out. Let's not jump to conclusions until we have all of the facts.

I've agreed with all your posts so far but the weather wasn't ok 3 days ago, I live on the gulf albeit in Rayong but the weather has been bad for longer than that. In fact I would go as far as the sea has been heavy for at least 2 weeks up here although that was nothing to do with the tropical depression entering Thailand at the moment. Did you see the report of a longtailed boat turning over with 4 Swiss on board traveling from Koh Tao?.

RIP to the victems of this boat disaster.  Being trapped inside of a capsided  boat and

drowning is a horrible way to die.
