Prayut Says Gov’t Right To Take Yingluck Assets Before Verdict

BANGKOK — Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Thursday his government was right to confiscate the bank accounts of former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra as it was a separate matter than her malfeasance trial, which has yet to render a verdict.

 

Prayuth said the order to fine Yingluck 35.7 billion baht was issued because the former prime minister must be held accountable for losses of an agricultural subsidy enacted by her government. He said it was irrelevant that her guilt has not yet been established by the court, which is expected to give its decision on Aug. 25.

If he does not confiscate it and she leaves he would be seen as a fool. They should just lock it down so nobody can touch it until the verdict is done. Its just a precaution, I am sure she has enough money stashed away somewhere.

that is what is called freezing assets, the money is still on her account but nobody can touch it until trial end.

Prayuth is playing a dangerous game IMO

Freeze the assets until the guilty verdict is handed down. We all know it's going to be guilty, so what's the point in taking the money now? Freeze it first. At least this way when she's found guilty you can say you followed the rule of law.

 

This is an awful advert for foreign investment. You'd have to be off your nut to invest anything significant here. There is zero rule of law here. It's all just made up as they go along simply on the whim of a very elite few.

He fails to mention that the 35 Billion order was not issued by a court, but an arbitrary decision from him and his team. Yingluck is challenging it in the court and so he should keep his greedy paws off it until the courts have rendered their decision. I suspect he wants to grab it now in case the courts rule against him. And you have to ask why he has targeted her and not the other members of the Government of the day who were also involved with the rice pledging scheme. He should be very careful. Public anger might turn around and bite him in the ass.

Of Cos Yingluck will be charged, prosecuted and sentenced/punish in court. It has already been decided way before, if not the basis for the whole coup would be pointless.

 

Even if we all know and disagree, She and her government has to be wrong and held accountable, becos if not what was the point of the Junta seizing power? 

 

The verdict has already been passed down. Is there any need to debate on this anymore?

 

The court is just a show that the Junta is following due process. Joke of the Century

So...in order to prove that this is not a witch hunt can we expect all former politicians and military personnel guilty of causing losses to the country to be made accountable in the same way ?

 

Somehow I don't think so.

The verdict in this case was already determined before the first day of trial.

No, it's not. It has been taken. The PM has said so himself in report at the top. 

There seems to have been a number of high profile cases recently where the assets of the accused have been seized prior to any guilt being established in a Court of Law.

You should look up how it goes in other countries often funds are frozen until a judgement is passed down. Just look it up and you will be amazed.

Quite correct.       CONFISCATE:  take or seize (someone's property) with authority. If it was frozen, it would be cold hard cash.

He is the law, judge, and executor.. so sure he can. Maybe in the future someone else will turn the table around to him.

The only people in a position to do that are the ones he is fronting for, so I doubt that.

Deputy Minister of Defence Gen Udomdej Sitabutr said he believes that seizure of former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s assets would not affect the ongoing reconciliation attempt.

 

The matter followed legal process, he said. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan had already explained that actions being taken are within the law and the matter was currently proceeding through the justice system, he added.

 

While declining to go into detail, Udomdej said that there was nothing to worry about concerning the case.

The funny thing is, in not one of the related articles does it mention how much money has been "seized", "frozen" or "confiscated" !! Not even Yingluck discloses a figure ?? 

Guess she must have already cleaned out her accounts, so she's just using the fact to gain sympathy and the junta is too embarrassed to say she beat them to the cash :)

PM Prayut on a whim can confiscate anything he wants from anybody he chooses. His own personal Article 44 gives him that authority. Be it gold mines owned by foreign investors, flash cars, property, money in bank accounts. And there is not a thing anyone can do about it.

These special powers of acquisition are not going to go away and the practice will likely expand to other assets of people he is not particularly fond of.

Where these seizures end up is the big question. My guess is they will sequestered until forgotten about and later distributed.

I cannot believe how many people believe the lies that are perpetuated by Yingluck & PTP, and then repeated by respectable news agencies so many times that half of the one-eyed Shinawatra supporters believe.

eg Yingluck was overthrown by the coup.

Yingluck was removed as PM by the  Constitutional Court of Thailand on 7 May 2014, ( For abuse of power ) three weeks before the coup.

 

The PM at the time of the coup was Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan

Referring to Thailand or the government as a dictatorship, military dictatorship or other such terms will be removed.
