BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha thanked members of the public who provided help to flood victims but warned politicians not to take advantage of the sufferings of the affected people for political gains.

Government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that the prime minister appreciated help given to flood victims by all sectors of the society.

The ongoing flooding was caused by nature and not by water mismanagement as witnessed in the big flood six years ago which caused extensive damage to the country, said Lt-Gen Sansern, adding that the prime minister did not want to see politicians to take advantage of hardship faced by flood victims for political gains.

"The ongoing flooding was caused by nature and not by water mismanagement as witnessed in the big flood six years ago which caused extensive damage to the country..."

Does this mean members of the Abhisit Govt will be prosecuted for mismanagement as Yingluck was not elected until Aug 2011 and the flooding was already well underway by then?

Another person who distorts the facts/ignores the truth - or maybe just an attempt at satire

03 July Thailand Election date

04 July PTP gain more votes and seats, but result cannot be ratified by Election Commission due to large number of complaints of election fraud

27 July electoral Commission officially announces PTP has won

31 July Tropical storm Nock Ten hits northern Thailand which was a major supplier of rainfall that caused the flooding through to November

05 August Yingluck appointed PM

So quite clear to a one eyed Shin supporter that the floods were the fault of Abhist's Govt, even though the PTP Agriculture Minister repeatedly said they didn't release water from the dams to help farmers harvest their rice crops

For the record I hold the Taksin administrations, the Democratic stooges and the military junta in equal contempt.

Yingluck took up office on August 5th.

Thailand had been experiencing very high rainfall, especially in the north for months before that but still the major dams were allowed to get close to capacity. When the big storm and high rainfall later in the rainy season hit there was nowhere for the runoff to go.

If the storage capacity of the dams had been managed better earlier in the season then maybe some of the flooding could have been lessened.

There is a lot of difference between mismanagement and deliberate mismanagement.

In the first case perhaps there was no communication between any of the agencies and the left hand did not know what the right hand was doing.

In the second case the Minister of Agriculture (I believe) over rode the dams and water management to keep as much water in the dams as possible to enable farmers to grow a 3rd crop of rice. When he was finally convinced that if the floodgates were not opened that there was a high probability of at least on large dam collapsing with a possible knock on effect down river he ordered the flood gates opened which in turned caused the floods in BKK.

The following year he got smart and ordered the floodgates opened early. Sdaly by then Thailand was in the grip of a drought and stayed there for nearly 3 years. BKK was not flooded during that period and there was little sign of a drought there. The rest of the country suffered throught the drought.

IMHO there are too many ministreies and departments all with their fingers in the pie for floods and drought controls, compounded by ALL governments not having any idea what to do but sticking their oar in anyway. (pun intended).

Plodprasop Suraswadi, a former deputy prime minister in the Yingluck administration, who supposedly started and built the National Disaster Warning Centre is the same person who know so much about flood controlls that he ordered boats put across the Cha Phrayo rivier with their engines running to speed up the flow of water in the river.

How I wish 'Mythbusters' had a special on a few boats pushing water along a large river with their props.

There is some question about who was the actual originator of this order. Enough said, say no more.
