Normal security for Yingluck’s court address

BANGKOK: -- Authorities will not designate the area in front of the Supreme Court as a controlled space ahead of the closing statement by ex-prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra in her case involving a rice-pledging scheme, Army Chief General Chalermchai Sitthisart said on Monday.

 

Yingluck, who has been charged with negligence for failing to prevent corruption and irregularities in the scheme, will make her own closing statement on Tuesday.

 

It is expected that a huge number of people will turn out to show support for her.

 

The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders has set August 25 as the date for the verdict in Yingluck’s case.

 

Chalermchai said authorities would use normal laws to keep order, with police in charge of both traffic and security in front of the court. The court did not ask for special security, he said.

Many Yingluck supporters expected outside court

A huge number of people are expected to show up to give moral support to former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday, when she is scheduled to deliver her closing statement in her court case, a source from Pheu Thai said on Monday.

 

Yingluck is facing charges of negligence for failing to prevent corruption and irregularities in a rice-pledging scheme while she was prime minister.

 

The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders will deliver its verdict in the case on August 25.

 

“To show support for her tomorrow is like sending a signal,” said the source, who asked not to be named. “But to show up on the verdict day means that they want to show that they stand by Yingluck.”

 

The source said the party would not mobilise a mass of supporters.

 

People would come to Bangkok on their own, with local leaders organising their travel, the source said.

Perhaps the Nation could break out of it's deep comfort zone (mostly just gathering up what other agencies report) and carefully ask say 10% of the crowd to share, in detail, why they are at the venue, how they got there, who provided lunch and what it has personally cost them.

Don't worry, the usual posters will be along shortly to post the usual expected comments about how wonderful and well loved she is; how this is all spontaneous affection; how it's all so unfair and biased; how she did such a great job helping the poor; etc etc etc.

 

And yet not one will comment or even try to explain how her actual actions, or non actions, weren't negligent.

More importantly is that she is still here and upset the coordinated effort by Prayut, crony corruption agencies and the court to get rid of her. Each day passed and the intimidation of the junta will galvanize more of her supporters. Who needs rhetoric when you have blatant and daily deluge of junta incompetency.
