KEY government figures yesterday sent out unclear signals regarding a reported US approval to sell missiles to Thailand.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the government did not have the budget to buy the weapons.

Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan yesterday denied having purchased new missiles from the United States, saying the military had already ordered all the weapons it needed. His reaction came in response to media reports that the US State Department had approved the sale of five RGM-84L Harpoon Block II missiles, costing Thailand approximately Bt828 million (US$24.9 million).

The US State Department reported that Thailand had asked to buy five anti-ship missiles, in addition to another missile, to be used by the DW3000 Class Frigate. The proposed purchase, it said, included containers, spare parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment.

It also included technical assistance from US government and contractor representatives, engineering and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics and programme support. “This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-Thai strategic relationship and to improve the security of an important partner,” the US State Department statement said.

A US Embassy official said, “Current military sales are part of our longstanding partnership and continuing sales of defence equipment to Thailand. All pending arm sales are guided by the criteria in the Conventional Arm Transfer Policy which includes regional stability and technology security.”

"Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said the government did not have the budget to buy the weapons."

but looks like you will still get them anyway, weapons seem more important than improving the

infrastructure, like making sure the electricity supply does not go off everytime it rains or is even

windy.that's only one example .

Once upon a time US systems were the best, however seems there are now better systems (for some things) out there and at a fraction of the cost. Buying overpriced US weapons is just part of the act of homage to the empire. Look at OZ, we used to get great planes from the US, but now we are being ripped off buying the (sometimes) flying lemon F-35, why, because we we told we have to.

You've now realized you have no money , you didn't have it when you brought the tanks , subs and you're still pushing for a H/S rail system, just what accounting system Prayut uses ( Besides the government to government agreements nic named the Prayut transparency) , needs to be questioned ..............................:coffee1:

Bitterness is not a substitute for facts.

or could it be that people ( at least 1 tv previous poster) wiki the true cost of the missiles and it came back at 1.2 mill each instead of 5 mill each.  it is called getting caught with hand in candy jar and having to get it out quickly.

if you look up the missle on Wikipedia the cost of the missle actually IS $1.2 million.

However that is only the cost of the missle itself. It does NOT cover the launcher, the cost of the retrofit on the ship itself nor anything else.

The proposed purchase, it said, included containers, spare parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment.

All of the above will be needed to make the system work and none of the above come free.

Sorry wanderluster but you didn't do your homework as I did.

It is not getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar but not stating the FULL cost of the system and not just the missile itself which on its own without the rest of the equipment, spares, manuals, training etc it is just a lump of very expensive metal.

Yep. Im sure the Chinese make copies but would you really trust the performance of anything critical when required to run in anger or just being reliable.

When the major airlines start buying Chinese planes I'll either believe it or give away air travel. The latter would be the probable response.

Why does Thailand need missiles?

One would think that under the current climate, the main enemy is the horrible farang, his money, his leasehold of the pool villa, carrying a  METV visa and who dares to enter the kingdom more then x times a year!!!

The US has confirmed Thailand has asked for them...and the dolts here deny anything is happening !

I supose that you could and then light the blue touch paper.

It would increase both the 0-100 kph acceleration time and the top speed my put you in the Guiness book of records.

I am not sure that I would like to be in the car if it hits something solid though.
