WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Lincoln Memorial in the U.S. capital was spray painted with expletive graffiti that was discovered on Tuesday, days after violence broke out in Charlottesville, Virginia, over an American Civil War-era monument.

The graffiti appeared to read "fuck law" spray painted in red on a column of the memorial to Abraham Lincoln, the American president who signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in the United States.

The National Park Service said in a statement that it was removing the graffiti from the monument and a Smithsonian Institution directional sign blocks away that was also vandalised with spray paint.

The U.S. Park Police said in the statement that they were investigating.

The graffiti marks the second time this year that the Lincoln Memorial, one of Washington, D.C.'s major tourist attractions, was defaced. In February, the monument to Lincoln, the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial, were vandalised with a marker pen.

The Park Service said that a monument preservation crew was removing the graffiti at the Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday using a mild paint stripper.

A Park Service photo showed the graffiti on a column of the memorial, and Twitter erupted with opinions on whether it said "law" or "Islam."

"Could the person who defaced the Lincoln Memorial please come back and write more clearly so we know who to be mad at," comedy writer Chase Mitchell wrote on Twitter.

Lincoln was president during the 1861-65 Civil War, and the vandalism was found days after deadly weekend violence at a far-right rally at a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The unrest has intensified a national debate over whether monuments to the pro-slavery Confederacy are symbols of heritage or hate.

In the 50's and 60's, the president came on TV and every news channel and TV station carried his broadcast while everyone in American listened intently to hear their world was safe and secure. Terrorism was something the Brits had to deal with while trying to hold onto the empire.

In the 70's, the president came on TV and was carried by every news channel and TV station while everyone in America listened to hear their lives were safe and secure.

In the 80's, the president came on TV and every news channel and TV station (except MTV) carried his broadcast and everyone in America, knowing their world was safe and secure listened and watched to see whose cookie the president was poking cigars into that month.

In the 90's the president came on TV and was carried by every news channel, most TV stations and a few blogs. Americans tuned in the see which Middle Eastern country we were going to attack next.

In 2000's, the president didn't need to come on TV as every American got up bright and early 1 blustery fall morning, turned on the TV and watched in horror as the largest, most horrific act of terrorism was being carried out live in front of their eyes. Suddenly their world was no longer safe and secure.

2010-2020, Americans have made the widest swing of the pendulum in presidential choices as has ever been seen in American history. An African-American who finished his term by apologizing to the world for us being Americans then tried to shove grandma into his slot thinking that America is just stupid enough to believe what he did was right. Followed by the biggest upset in the history of American politics. We elected a man who was NOT a bought and paid for lifetime politician, who spoke his mind without intentionally or worrying about, hurting a minority groups feeling as everything he spoke of was directed at someone, not some minority. (Illegals don't count nor should they) Every American leader that has had to deal with NK has always placated them and when we finally have someone who just stood up and said "kiss my ass", the world freaked out but the fat man went silent.

Now we have a situation where a bunch of "known named bad groups" and a group of "unnamed, armed anti-known named groups" that have fought over a piece of cast iron.  The Dems and the LameStreamMedia were very quick to blame President Trump as well as members of the GOP. They've even called it racist when it was a white male that killed a white female. For that to be racist, he'd have to be German and she'd have to be Jewish.

The governor of SC came on TV and said they knew who these people were from the KNG, knew that they have caused trouble everywhere they went and then GRANTED them permission to protest the removal of an American history statue. A statue that has stood there for over 100 years without people giving it a single thought until 2 weeks ago.

The police force KNEW who these people were that had permission to protest yet, did nothing in beefing up security let alone covering all the entrances that other hate groups could exploit. THEY KNEW all this ahead of time yet it's President Trumps fault just because he didn't quote the "Known Group" list but instead, called a spade a spade.

Now it seems that he was 1000% correct when he asked the media how far should it go. He mentioned Washington who was a slave owner, Jefferson who was a slave owner and recently replaced on the American $20 by an Africa-American by an African-American.

Now we see the Lincoln memorial being defaced.

I hope Americans wake up in the next few elections and replace these teat sucking, politically correct, trough feeders. If DC has it's own National Guard then I'd be posting them around the city in noticeable numbers for a few days. Too bad the USSC made flag burning a legal version of free speech. May need to rethink that 1.

After the PC brigade are finished erasing all memorials to the confederacy, perhaps they could go after memorials to war mongers. Washington DC would keep them busy for a while.

You mean the FDR memorial for his leadership in helping us win WWII?

The Korean war memorial for those who fought and died to help South Korea in their war?

The Washington monument?

The WWII memorial?

The African-American civil war memorial?

The DC WWI memorial?

Nice rant.....

Doh! It wasn't a suggestion, it was a warning against appeasing the PC.

The problem isn't the memorials, it's the nut jobs using them as lightening rods for their violent protests. Go after them,  leave the memorials alone.

It would be nice to see him defend the thousands of National Monuments and the National Parks which he used an executive order to open up for exploitation.    Statutes can be replaced or repaired; natural wonders can't.
