BANGKOK, 18 August 2017 (NNT) – Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Minister Ormsin Chivapruck promoted the non-use of food containers made from styrofoam to save the people's health and environment.

The PMO minister and Consumer Protection Board Secretary General Prasit Chalermwuttisak visited a food court of Ying Charoen Market in Bang Khen district, Bangkok, to promote the non-use of food containers made from styrofoam.

Styrofoam materials, when in contact with heat from food, might release styrene and ethylbenzene - the chemicals which cause irritation to skin and eyes, coughing, breathing difficulties, and nausea when inhaled. Styrene is classified as cancer-causing toxins by international cancer research organizations, while ethylbenzene might possibly cause the loss of consciousness or death when consumed.

The PMO minister said styrofoam containers, which may be slightly cheaper in price than containers made of other materials, are dangerous to consumers, thus food vendors should opt for using containers made from natural materials such as bagasse, tapioca, protein from beans and corns, or banana leaves.

The Office of the Consumer Protection Board is raising the public awareness on the dangers of styrofoam and holding campaigns at markets. The office will evaluate the change of food container types.

we need Styrofoam to help create more customers for the "health care" industry. Thailand is the hub of that.

and Styrofoam is killing marine life in our oceans, so we don't have to do it ourselves.

The other day i got kao pad in a cardboard (or so) container but it sucked all the juices out of the rice which had become very dry.

For those containers we need a sheet of plastic under the food. In fact we need better containers, Thailand was the hub of bio degradable containers some years ago but i've never seen them.

Those were made from sugarcane or corn iirc.

Would be great if they started using bananaleaves as container again, just like in the past....

guy should address plastic bags

Years ago they where being turned into oil....!
the government could provide an monetary incentive to the thousands of rubbish bin rummagers to collect plastic bags like they now collect plastic bottles..and use them as fuel to produce electricity.

What about some proper waste (and wastewater) treatment plants, so we can avoid landfills in the future?

Some woman dressed to the nines and a couple of cohorts, outnumbered by the photographers, stood outside the local market in Samet... at 2:30 pm... the market does not open until 3 pm

Furthermore their laminated notice board "Say NO to foam" was in English. None of the stall holders speak English and, from my daily visits, I think I am the only English speaker to go there!!!

The camera does not tell the whole story!!!

Why pussyfoot around?....just ban them and promote cardboard containers....

yes....lets cut down even more trees.

Bit of a conundrum for the Greenies....you can't grow trees fast enough to make up for the plastic bags/containers they should replace.

Yay sisters....another one in the knackers of the filthy capitalist pigs......idiots the lot of them.
