Ten university students were thrown into the sea when a concrete slab they were standing on collapsed at Sudkhobfa pier in Chanthaburi's Tha Mai district on Friday.

Some 20 students from Burapha University Chanthaburi Campus as well as dozens of Chinese exchange students were visiting the pier when the slab collapsed, sending 10 students plunging into the 1.5-metre-deep water under the pier. They were safely rescued by local fishermen and fellow students.

An initial probe found that the two-metre-wide four-metre-long concrete slab showed signs of deterioration. It left a gaping hole at the pier with rusty metal bars around the edge.

Following the incident, provincial governor Witurat Srinam led officials to inspect the scene.

Witurat ordered a thorough investigation. A sign was posted at the site to prohibit people taking trucks or heavy loads onto the pier.

He said engineers would later inspect the structure to make way for repairs.

Thousands of concrete drain covers on pavements are in a similar condition all over Thailand and nothing is ever done about them Except sometimes people will stick small tree branches in the holes to warn people there is a hole there. BUT of course it doesn't occur to them to actually maintain or repair the covers

So a concrete slab deteriorates and falls into the sea and every official and governor and his cat comes to inspect it ? That's whats wrong with Thailand, they have all their priorities wrong. What a waste. Simply sending an engineer would have done. Wonder now if the governor is on the phone to get a 44 issue to repair it !

You must have missed the bit about the Chinese.

Why use the word 'thown'? ....for dramatic effect?   They fell.  It was gravity.  They weren't thrown.

"The White House was thrown into disarray "

"The White House fell into disarray "

I think thrown implies an external force whereby fell implies by own actions or power"

Rescued from 1.5m deep water???  Got to keep remembering how short most Asians are.

BTW replaced the g/f's original tyres on her Wave with 80/90 TT900's - her legs couldn't reach the ground.

I saw so much failed concrete and rusting rebar everywhere.  Just a time bomb.   So many piers had so much failure they had areas blocked off but no repairs going on.   No value to life in Thailand.   If government and people were worried about big lawsuit settlements things would change.    I read about these small settlements.  Didn't boss only pay 90,000 to the policeman family?   It should be a lifetime of his earnings plus much more.

I Wonder how many cell phones were wet?  Thank goodness no injuries were reported.   That dirty rusty rebar would make a bad wound

Wait until the substandard concrete used to build the massive hotels, malls and public transport networks starts to degrade.

As far as I know, there is no preventative maintenance being done on any of it...

No need. About a year ago when a building collapsed and people were killed they knee-jerked a hotline number for people who might happen to notice serious cracks in a building. It was called the Building about to Collapse Hotline". Saves on maintenance if people get there quickly to rescue inhabitants. I do not joke!
