Family of five killed in Surat Thani collision

By The Nation

Five members of a family including a six-year-old boy were killed when the pickup truck carrying them crashed into the back of an 18-wheel tractor trailer in Surat Thani late on Sunday night.

Noting the absence of skid marks at the scene on Surat-Takuapa Toad in Tambon Ban Thamniab, Khirirat Nikhom district, police suspect the driver had dozed off at the wheel.

Kanon Phathaisong, 45, driving the big rig, saw the pickup approaching from behind. It struck his vehicle without reducing speed, he told police.

The victims were identified as Surat Pirom, 50, his wife Boonruang Pirom, their son Suthiwat Pirom, 28, their daughter-in-law, Orawan Ruangngam, 26, and their six-year-old grandson, Ratchanon Pirom.

The one comment I would make is that large trucks are very poorly marked in Thailand with dim lights and reflective warning plates.

Improving these might lead to a decrease in collisions, but who is going to check/pay?

Undertaking at nighttime possibly...trucks park with tail lights covered in diesel soot.....another fatal rear end smash.

And no lights on the sides. I nearly had a problem with a long trailer truck crossing (turning right from a road on the left through a U-turn gap) on an unlit highway some years ago on a dark night.

RIP. Very sad.
