PM urges orderliness at rice pledging scheme verdict reading

BANGKOK, 24 August 2017 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has asked that all turning out to support former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra during her trial’s verdict reading to respect the law and be mindful of the nation’s best interests with security officials stating they will only be applying routine measures during the reading.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha has urged all who intend to be present at the reading of the verdict for the rice pledging scheme case against the government of former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to consider the consequences of their actions and to be confident in the legal process. He reiterated that his administration did not interfere in this case in any way and does not want to take needless steps against members of the public.

Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs and Minister of Defense Gen Prawit Wongsuwan meanwhile, made known that officials will use standard procedures to handle any crowds that turn up for the verdict and asked that they only avoid causing any disturbance. He voiced his own belief that once the verdict is read, the former government’s supporters will return home.

Royal Thai Army Commander Gen Chalermchai Sittisat said his force will allow police to take the lead on the matter and only play a supporting role.
