I flew out of Suvarnabhumi in March and after boarding the plane I noticed that I didn't have a departure stamp in my passport.

I had a marriage extension at the time and the IO told me that I would need a re-entry permit. I told the IO that this wasn't required as the extension would be expired by the time I return. I think the IO forgot to give me an exit stamp as he thought I would be applying for a re-entry permit.

Will this give me any problem when I return to Thailand?

Are you sure you don't have a stamp hidden away somewhere in your passport?

I don't think the officer forgot the stamp because he thought you would be getting a re-entry permit since the desk to get one is before departure immigration.

On entry you will need proof of the date you departed the country. Your boarding pass for the flight out would work. I would guess that your departure is shown in their records and he only forgot to stamp you out so it will not be a big problem.

Definitely no stamp. Would it be anything to do with the entry stamp being in another passport? I renewed my passport after arriving in Thailand.

I assume you had your stamps transferred at immigration when you got your new passport since you were on an extension. They would of transferred you entry stamp when they did it. If not you would have needed to show both passports on departure from the country.

It should not be a problem as long as the I/O entered your exit in the system but expect to be delayed whilst it is sorted out, as you have left on a new PP the fact that there is no exit stamp will be easy to spot

However if he didn't then yes it will be a major issue

I'm not sure how you would go about checking this before you come back, maybe contact the guy at ThaiVisaService, for a small fee he should be able to check for you

Whether you get a reentry permit or not, there should always be exit and entry stamps. Since, as @ubonjoe points out, the reentry desk is before immigration, I guess it might be possible that the IO, trying to be a helpful nice guy, tried to direct you back to the reentry desk (necessary before recording your exit from the country at Suvarnabhumi) and you walked the wrong way thus avoiding your exit being recorded in the immigration system.

There was another recent thread on someone else leaving at Suvarnabhumi without clearing immigration. You might want to refer to the different opinions posted in that thread as to how to handle the situation. Good luck!

I didn't go anywhere near the re-entry desk as I didn't need a re-entry permit. Everything was done at the departure desk and for some reason the IO didn't give me an exit stamp.

But did the IO swipe the photopage through a scanner? If so it is possible that your exit date has been recorded electronically in the system. Best to ask ThaiVisaService if they can get this checked out for you, as suggested above, I think.

I appreciate that, and my fear there may have been a break down in communication may be unfounded. Are you quite sure the IO understood you were not going to get a reentry permit? If he was under the impression you were going to, this would be an explanation for why your passport was not stamped, and also your exit from the country not recorded. Misunderstandings are not rare between Thai officials and foreigners, but hopefully my fear that this might be true in your case is unnecessary pessimism.

Incidentally, did the IO take your departure card? If so, I would say the chance is almost 100% that he recorded your exit in immigration's system. If you still have the departure card, I fear the worst.

Not always and it is not a problem. Although not Thailand I left Changi with the new scan passport and thumb on the way out automatic gate .. questioned the lack of stamp in my passport and was assured no problem as it is on the computer. I guess same for thailand, no stamp out but the guy will have his exit recoreded on the computer. No big dealm just human error!
