All the ones i know of were drunks on bikes running off the road at night... I have heard of serious accidents on motor bikes at high speeds on highways by people throwing buckets of cold water at them. Give that man a teddy bear, bloody good shot. You have convoys of pickups in Chiangmai and traffic is in gridlock and it is impossible to drive around the inner city area. If you have the police stopping and booking every single vehicle because they have a bucket of water in the back then traffic will go from a snails pace to a complete stop. What about all the people on the side of the road with thier large bins of water thowing it on the road or the firehoses spraying mega amounts of water from the stages? If they really wanted to stamp this out they should have started an adverstising campaign 6 months ago outlining the intentions and not 14 days prior to the event. If this does work all I can see is the reduction of all the pretty little things in wet T Shirts and that will be ashame. IMHO people should adjust their behavior accordingly and take extra precautions. If this means driving a bit slower, dealing with being hit with water, and allowing extra time to get from place to place so be it. Although I dont think its a good idea to be throwing water at vehicles moving at high speeds, they should be focusing their efforts on the drunk drivers and not people who are trying to enjoy the celebration. This is supposed to be a fun time for everybody, I wish were I grew up we had something like this once a year (USA). Anyway i don't use the bike anymore during song kran. After that bucket of water on me at speed i felt it was too dangerous. I just use the car now for those days. No problems here, but I do own a car not everyone does. Common sense often leaves the brain of people here, anyway i like songkran it can be fun. culicine Posted March 29, 2013 Share Posted March 29, 2013 (edited) Another genuinely great idea that would certainly reduce the road toll, especially more minor injuries caused by bikes sliding off the wet slippery roads. They get very wet, especially during the dry season with the build-up of sludge on the roads. Water play should b restricted to walking-only areas or private residences. The problem will be giving it over to provincial govenors - will they have the will to enforce it? It will certainly stop some of the horrendous traffic congestion in many of the towns here. Took me over an hour to travel a few hundred meters through a water celebration once...let's see how this pans out. It is a great idea but I doubt any of us believe that it will actually be enforced. Cambodia managed to stop water throwing in the tourist centre of Siem Reap - I can only imagine that Cambodian enforcement is somewhat better than Thai. It's easy to enforce ... if they really wanted to. The government can force provincial offices to do it and threaten them with a cut in government funding if they don't do it. But will they do it? jvs Posted March 29, 2013 Share Posted March 29, 2013 Songkran is the biggest holiday in Thailand and i do believe most Thais are celebrating it. Each year i see countless people having a lot of fun,why try and take that away from them. I see rows of pick-ups both carrying water and people and having an all out water fight,it is a lot of fun!!!! Sure there are accidents and mishaps but in general it is not that bad. Just check out all of the smiles on people faces,especially kids. In Europe it is still cold and most people have spend most of the last six months indoors,if you don't like this water fest just stay home for a few days.After dark it is mostly quiet every where. WILL be banned?? They actually HAVE been banned since at least 1979. Section 20 of Thailand's Land Traffic Act B.E. 2522 (A.D. 1979) states: A driver is responsible for not letting his passengers, animals, or loads to fall, leak, give out smell, reflect light, etc, which may cause harm or danger to the public. The mischievous Thai public have been abusing this law for decades it seems, and now it is time for the authorities to step in and take control. I guess you don't live in Thailand. I have seen many accidents caused by idiots throwing a bucket of water at a passing motocycle. Iced water is the latest stupid idea, and has an even worse effect.
