I already feel like I've been the test case for that strategy. SSA response time on a total of 4 applications for benefits (2 each for both the wife and I) has been dreadful. They made a mistake on 3 of the 4. They have corrected 1 of the mistakes but haven't as yet implemented all the benefit changes resulting from the correction. President Biden signed a bill on Jan. 5 that will eliminate a penalty on my benefits. It's retroactive to Jan. 2024 but I'm sure I won't see the money until 2026 or later.

Somewhat related to this topic.... Today I came across an SSA.gov page where you can request a call back from them instead of waiting on hold. Since moving to Thailand 4+ years ago I probably spent 24 hours in total on hold to reach someone on the SSA 800#. https://secure.ssa.gov/cet/contact-us-ui/#/call-back I just tried it about 3 minutes after it's supposed to open (8AM in DC) but so far I can't request a call back. I tried again and made progress... but it still says call back is not available but on a different screen. Hurry and take advantage before Trump/Musk find out about it and cancel it because it may allow you to get your money from SSA faster.

I think WISE wasn't directly transferring money out of Thailand. I assume the OP was disguising his transfer by using a VISA/MasterCard debit card to fund a WISE multi-currency account. Then the OP would transfer from that WISE account to UK. It was a rather ingenious tactic best suited for small transfers.

yeah... online SS account is the easiest route. My initial 1099 was available online several weeks ago ... sometime early December, I think. Due to dumb mistakes on SSA's part, I was in overpayment in 2024. I paid off the overpayment in late Dec. because my initial 1099 included the overpayment amount. I wanted to reduce the amount on my SSA-1099 for 2024. Shortly after paying it off my online SSA account had the updated 1099 available. I received my paper copy of the updated 1099 earlier this week.
